Questions about outdoor patch [picking/preserving the patch]

I searched and stumbled on a post but it was 12 years old so I wanted to make sure, but with indoor grows you're supposed to cut it at the base to help it put out another flush. But I read that with outdoor grows you want to use a twist and pull method and to try to get it by the root otherwise it'll open up the mycelium to disease. Should I use the twist and pull method instead of just using my razor knife to cut the base?
Also, can I throw my used substrates on top of the patch to help it put out more flushes after I pull these? Or should I mix it into the patch by digging it all up and mixing it in with it?

When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

I'm guessing that you are talking about cubes, in which case you should definitely mix it all up.
Cutting VS pulling is always down to preference; always was, always will be. Contams outside are much less of a problem.
Talking strictly from my experience in indoor growing, I've never seen a contam developing because I pulled my shrooms. Cutting is a different story. I often find that the stumps left over from cutting grew mold by the time the 2nd flush is done.
Woodlover pickers/growers always pull the shrooms, later, they use the stem butts to do more patches. I doubt they would do that if it caused contamination, which again, is not really much of a problem outdoors. Some woodlover growers will throw some spores (which came from a dirty outside shroom) into an LC and once they get a circus of different molds, bacteria and mushroom mycelium in it, they throw it outside. The person I heard this from said it works more often than it doesn't. That's how resistant mycelium is to contams when it is outside.

Awesome, thanks man.
Yes, I'm talking about cubes. The patch was made with clean spawn, hay, horse poo, and old coir/verm substrates, so I should just dig up the whole thing and mix anymore used substrates that I'm done with in with the already colonized patch?
This is the patch so far.

Well, seeing that you have a bunch of shrooms growing there, try to find a part of it where there's no mushrooms growing if possible. Just dig a hole, crumble up your spent sub and mix it in with your outside substrate of choice. Cubes will mix with other cubes so you won't see any negative results from mixing them. Even two different species can help each other grow but since they won't fuse together, one can overgrow and eventually "choke" the other in the long run.

Do you think it would be a good idea to just dig the patch wider and add my used monotub substrate to the outer sides of the patch? That way I don't disturb the current patch already made and the substrates could possibly get some more nutrients from the colonized patch?

Sure, you can do whatever you like. Throwing spent tubs outside is not exactly a science, as long as theres mycelium, substate and water, it will be dandy.
