OFFICIAL Nordic / Baltic Psilocybe semilanceata thread 2016 1
#23537161 - 08/13/16 06:56 AM (7 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
I think I'm first on this forum to report the first Nordic liberty cap for 2016, so I'm starting this thread. I notice that it's exactly one year since the last years thread was started
This is a thread for reports of Psilocybe semilanceata found in the nordic/baltic countries. This is NOT a thread for ID questions!
I found this one today in a Deschampsia cespitosa along a forest path, at the same spot where I've found the first libs a few years in a row now..

Now, i hope you all will find this many (photos from last year)

All the best for a fruitful season. There must be hundreds if not a thousand in those pics from last season.

About 200m. I'm in southwest Sweden, close to Gothenburg. On a swedish forum, another guy reported finding 20, he's in southeast.

Nice!
I actually found around 50 the second week of July, but I didn't bother making a thread that early.
They've started popping again during the last week. Snatched a few from a lawn today, might be getting out in the fields over the weekend. But the Porcini are out as well, so I'll see who gets the most attention.

Oh, you found some in July, I didn't know that. I actually thought it was strange since you usually find them a few weeks earlier than us southerners
Yeah, I'm only picking edibles and looking for rare mushrooms now. Will wait a bit before I go hunting libs.

Great man Those pics kinda hurt me, I was able to find just about 80 last season, but I was a complete beginner. This year I'm gonna go big I found three more libs(?) today, check my topic(in about 1h) if you are interested.

Hey all Nordic/Baltic pickers!
I thought I found my first 2 libs this year, but now doubts have settled in my mind. I have picked for some years now, but I am doubting they were Panaeolina/Panaeolus foenisecii . Should have taken photo, but didn`t. It all seemed 100% lib, only it didn`t have distinctive nipple. They had light-milky rubbery stem, dark gils, light cap...
Now when I am watching photos of Panaeolina/Panaeolus foenisecii, they seemed very similar. Guess I still have to tune my ID - skills!
Google`s Panaeolina/Panaeolus foenisecii:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/Panaeolus_foenisecii.jpg/250px-Panaeolus_foenisecii.jpg

Can't tell what you got without pictures. Please remember to bring a camera when out hunting.

Taking pictures of what you pick is always good. Like Angler says, bring your camera! And please don't use this thread as an ID thread, lets keep this one for confirmed libs only!

Incredible one-day hauls knarkkorven! How many fields did you hit for that? The whole day I bet. That's way more than any one person needs, but I can understand the appeal of finding such large amounts. After a while, though, you'd have way too many to use and you'd run out of places to store them. And there are only a certain number of friends you can give to. A haul like that, esp of such a potent species, would probably last me two, maybe three years...and that's just one day of hunting, so it's not counting the rest of the season

Yes, in Norway they grow at least up until about 70° north, so I guess that covers Sweden as well.

1 field per pile. About 4 hours for the first, 6 hours for the second.

Yeah, it has actually become a problem. I have solved the storage by extracting them and making pills but I have more than I need, will last a life time with my current trip rate...

They are out here in Norway, but so far in small numbers.
From yesterday morning, these were pretty small (notice the serrated margin and lack of papilla):

I'm however more into the following business these days:

Thanks to kk. for opening this thread.
Yesterday I was able to find 25 semis in a field, never ever I have found em in this early. Oh boy it was hot day about plus 23
Surely I also pick in these days mostly edibles, not so much semis.

I hope they will pop up in beginning of September at my side.

Here's a thread from when I started finding liberty caps along forest paths 3 years ago: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18763551
Since then, I have found them at this place every year. The forest paths are the earliest flushing habitats (also the place where I found the one in the first post).
In the forest, it's always good to look out for the right grass species (Deschampsia cespitosa)...

Deschampsia cespitosa is also the indication plant in the fields, when trying to find new ones. But ofcourse it doesn`t give any guarantees. No guarantees with shroom hunting anwyways. Right now no finds at all in my usual fiels. Will wait for mid Sept...
Thanks for the pics!

Northern Norway is blowing up. I find semilanceatas everywhere I look. (Well, I know where to look.) And they're huge! Like, world record huge! I've done three trips, all in under two hours, with two friends, and we have collected about 5000 on one field alone.

And then there's Estonia. It's been raining for ~2-4 days here, is raining right now aswell(or was, idk, really wet outside) yet, as I haven't found any in the past week, don't know If i'd find any now.. hmh. Hopefully I'll find them soon.
e: nevermind, gonna go check a few forest paths aswell, I guess. Closest places to find any, until getting my car fixed.

yep, meantime in Estonia: nothing... It has been raining quite a bit and temps now also around 10-14c at night. I`m gonna go check out a small field that used to have some today... Though I promised to wait until mid-Sept, it`s really hard! )

Here's the fun guys ready for sorting after a two hour harvest. There really are some huuuge ones in there. All checked and confirmed Psilocybe Semilanceata. The biggest one at the start of the video too. Don't bother telling me it's another mushroom. It's checked and triple checked.

Blessings Nordic/Baltic folks,
Very happy to see this thread around. As I can see the season is marching southwards from the northern Europe. I am about to do some field surveying for semi's soon in Lithuania as well. To make our thread somewhat more informative for ourselves and everyone else I would suggest to accompany the findings posts with some basic information: geographic location (esp. latitude), recent day/night temperatures and presence/absence of rain. I think it would be highly useful to be able to see the fruiting pattern of our favourite shrooms all across the region. Don't you think?

Hey, have you seen any myco-life in fields at all? Some look-a-likes etc.? I haven`t...Have found only 4-5 libs total in fields that used to have some last year. Found a new potential field, but I guess no point going even checking before some decent rainfall...

Yesterday, I went to the pasture that produced 400 at one picking last year. I Only found one... so, I believe it's a bit early, the weather has been warmer than usual the last couple of weeks.

Nice haul! Are you somewhere in Norrland? Seems the high temps in southern Scandinavia have prevented any decent fruiting so far this season. I only find the odd, dried-out one now and then.

I think it makes sense. Low night temps equals high humidity. I guess you could even chance a return after two or three days.

I can't remember I've ever actually *wanted* the rain to come before LOL
Frankly I'm enjoying that there's no rain BUT I want the mushrooms to grow before everything freezes here (we usually get hard frost by mid October).
I may check on them tomorrow already since it will have been two nights with dew by then. If they "think" that dew is rain (or they don't care) then they might be waiting for me already Vad tycker du?
Oh. I just remembered some detail. It's a funny area. I picked there Friday afternoon. Even then, my pants on my knees got wet as I had to kneel down. I'm sure there had been no rain in the area. So maybe dew alone will cut it. I'll check as soon as I have some time.
___________________ ETA: I did go back this morning. The dew was so bad (read: good) that I got soaking wet up to my knees. So this is good for them (temp 3C). But I've only found a handful. Too early. Anyway I hope they think it's been raining. I certainly did. LOL

So what is up Nordic and Baltic? Still sunny and golden Autumn? It rained in Estonia first time in month last Thursday (4-5 hours), some morning dew going on and temp 10-15c day. 3-10 night. So I will check some spots this week...

Went to my little test-field (closer to where I live) and seems some libs starting to pop-up finally! Got 20 little ones in 1 hour search. This week promises some more rain. So probably will go hunting further away (some exciting new fields I found in Summer)

Nice find. This year will be my second one to look for libs here in South Finland. Last year I was very busy and didnt find time for this. Was just wondering if already time for growing. Guess I'll have to check some places around this weekend. I'll be happy to meet other people around and share the fun

Nice. Fall hit Norway yesterday with a splash and a drop from 20 to 12 °C, so hopes are up for a little foraging soon.
Seems there has been a split between north and south, as the northerners have been raking it in since mid-August.

Report from Lithuania: it still is a very dry and relatively warm autumn weather here, yesterday day / night temperatures remained around +15C. There was no serious rainfall for several weeks if not a month. Picked my first libs during September 25th-28th last year, this matched with decent amanita and boletus growth in the nearby forests. So far, haven't spotted any libs in the same field this year, there also was no autumn boletus growth thus far. The new moon is about to begin tomorrow, let's see if this will come with some weather changes and will finally deliver some decent mushrooms.

If every single night, for as long as I can see in the forecast (8 days), the temps will drop down to 0...-1 (and once -2C), while the daytime temps are 5-7C, and I can see lots of dew and high humidity but no rain, is that about the end of the season, or will it actually trigger a flush?

I was riding my MTB along a dirt road today. Just outside a horse pasture, close to beginning of the owners lawn/yard, he had mowed the grass a bit and a few big yellow mushroom caps caught my attention. My first look at the biggest cap shape was screming "liberty cap" so I had to break and turn around, It was interested enough to find out if it was just a couple of Conocybes or if it really was this big full grown libs. And it sure was!

Damn it, they don`t want to come out this year? Went to my new "potential gold-mine" and zero. I mean no shrooms at all. Flora seem to be right. Weather: Rained 5 days ago two days, lots of wind, temps only +8-10c at day, 5-8C at night. Found 3 miserable libs in my "fruiting" field. So far found like 30shrooms total all together all "season"

Been hunting today again, no luck. The place seems so perfect: hills, sheeps, their feces everywhere, grass clumps. What could be the problem? Not enough rain? It hasn't rained in like 2 days now.

well imo some places might look perfect, but if there aint any lib spores out there, the mushroom wont grow, what im going to do myself is gotta explore new places, becouse, theres big colonies of mushrooms that i could find, i bet libs area fruiting too, just in different spot from where we look

That could be true. But how far from the original place should we go? A few hunder meters, a few kilos, more? There aren't many more places to look for libs in my town except that one..

Yeah, another crappy season for me. No rains at all, maybe 100 semis in the spot this year, dry so dry for past five years. Plus side is that I was able to find P. medullosas in two new spots.

I'm leaning towards thinking the chemtrails have killed them off (sarcasm)!

In Lithuania it's already somewhere from -1 to -3 celsius. If it gets warmer, and according to the news it should, is there still a chance for libs to grow?

That's hilarious knarkkorven ! So poetic... I want both of these pictures in poster format. Btw how do the cows behave around you when you go on their field? Are they ever aggressive?

I only encountered aggressive bulls once, stomping in the ground and really making me know I wasn't welcome. In most cases, they are only very interested in what I'm doing there. It begins with all of them staring at me from distance, then they come running towards me, stopping only 10 feet away (that was a bit scary before i learned their behavior). The leader cow come closer and take a sniff, then a couple of others do the same. Then they follow me around for a couple of minutes until they finally realize that I haven't got any food, after which they go back to the usual cow activities, leaving me to continue my search.
They are very curious and at the same time very suspicious, sometimes a quick move like raising my hand will cause them to jump back.

That charging toward you and stopping only 10 feet away sounds way too terrifying for me They're huge, heavy, strong animals. I don't think I could it, which makes me kind of sad because hunting in a cow pasture was something I'd hoped to do one day; whenever I see them, they're immobile or very slow, so I thought hunting in their field would be peaceful, as long as a farmer isn't shooting at me. Are sheep/horse pastures any better? How do they behave?

I had a bunch of sheep running at me once. But the same as cows, they just stop like 10 feet away.

How's it going for you guys? It has really exploded now! People are reporting finding large numbers (1000+) here now.
I went out for a look and found maybe a hundred, many small ones coming up. But since the grass was very wet it was hard spotting them.

I also found some Stropharia pseudocyanea (not active, but very blue):

So far the driest fall I can remember. Haven't been finding anything since maybe mid August.
But I haven't really had the time to do serious hunting, so much travelling/working.
Nice that it finally hits though, maybe I'll get a chance over the weekend.
And very nice shots, KK!

Thanks everyone! I was actually very pleased with how this one came out:

ISO200, 1/60 f2.8 . Manual focus and freehand just before sun set. The gray background is lichens on a stone. I held the mushrooms with my right hand, the camera with my right and the lens leaning on my left arm... It took about 10 shots to get a couple of good ones and one great!

This inspires me to take another look also. It rained heavy 2 days ago (finally). It also was some mild frost 4-5 days ago. Now temps are around +3C at night, +6C at day. Disappointed in this dry Autumn, but sun was also nice and golden. But gonna take a look also today to the field!

Hej alla, I am in the göteborg area and over the past few days the weather has been good, it finally started raining a few days ago and there has been hundreds popping up!
I am originally from the UK and I noticed that Nordic libs look quite different, there are many more that are close to flying saucer kind of shapes. Here are some pictures:
Day1: I cycle around, I go through a few sheep fields but the grass is so short and there are no shrooms to be found, It hasn't rained enough. But on the way home I find these... Maybe that cow field will be good to visit tomorrow...

SO I go back with a friend and what do I find?

Next day:

Towards the end of that day a tractor came into the field and started cutting the grass, RIP. The next day I go back and the tractor is still at it, well I have read about libs springing back after grass being cut so maybe it isn't so tragic... So I went to the field I found the first ones in and found so many...

Nudibranch: Hej! Nice photos. I agree that you found a lot of saucer shaped libs there. I believe it's a very local thing. I found a lot of bottle shaped on the pasture I visited a few days ago. But if I had walked to another spot one kilometer away, they wouldn't have looked the same.

Today, I had an incredible time out in a large cow pasture. I knew it would be great since I checked it earlier this week (my last photos), and on my way there today I spotted some libs on a lawn. But I didn't think it would be this good. They were everywhere. I could pick 5, walk a could of meters and pick 5 more, on an on and on. Got 490 grams wet, left several hundreds and only searched 1/5 of the pasture area. It must be around 1200-1500 since many of them was pretty small.

Tripped the other day on 20 mushrooms, it was quick to come and also intense with the autumn colours of the forest making the leaves all switch rapidly and fluidly between yellow orange and red. It felt like a time when I took 40, these were dry but I think they were the larger than usual mushrooms that I had picked (see my last post). Maybe there is something about that strain of mushroom that is very strong...
Well anyway, it hasn't rained for a few days but will tonight so I had a quick look today and found a few patches with absolute giants growing! but there was not as many mushrooms as last time. The huge ones here were found near a very stinky fox or maybe badger poo.

60g dried = 1500-1800 libs.
But I think this was the end of the 2016 season. We had frost all day today and expecting snow tomorrow, and freezing temperatures next week.
Amazing season. At first I thought it was going to be crap due to the drought, but this flush in the end was extreme. I have picked liberty caps for 13 years and have not witnessed a season like this before.

In amount picked this season, I'm on an all time low. I don't mind, however, just thankful for them showing up at last so I could pick a decent 10 grams dried. Don't consume too often these days in any case, also I'm stuck with thousands from previous seasons. It is the hunt which is the main thing for me. I even dream about hunting liberty caps...
But yes, season just about started here too, but this picture from earlier on today tells me it is soon finished:

Nice pics (I won't quote them since there are loads). I agree that the flying saucer ones seem more atypical here (from my experience, at least). I have found them, mind you. Which environmental factors in Scandinavia do you think make them more likely? I am not sure what causes them.

I Had a Convo on here a few years back in which someone suggested it was the type of grass they "came through"... I know Captain Futures Libs, dubbed "UFO Libs", where the Flattest saucer-like I'd ever seen and they grew on a "Grass mix". But I've looked at the grasses in my various spots and it seems maybe more to do with soil composition, or maybe just location specific conditions or slight "strain" variations? Regardless, I find it interesting. My one spot I call "Doozer field" (Not cuz it's a Doozie but from Fraggles...yeah I went there... The Trash-Heap has spoken...Nahhhh lol) it always produces "mutants" and has odd grass unlike any other spot I find "Libs"...It's also very thickly "Clovered" which is very rare for Lib finds here in Canada at least.

I'm not sure, but it is entirely possible that the appearance of them could be due to genetic factors, it makes sense that genetic variation would arise. The saucer types in my opinion seem like ab intermediate in appearance to that Psilocybe strictipes species. Ps.Strictipes does have differvent spore shapes but in an organism like this which has great numbers and great amountservice of reproductions occuring it makes sense for there to be the appearance of some kind of different "races".
But it could very well be due to many environmental factors, the environment could very well have a strong force in selecting a certain phenotype of them to survive from that great pool of variation one can see in their phenotype.

So, apparently a week of temps as low as -8"C won't kill off a healthy patch of P. semilanceata.
After the weather turned back to rain and temps between 2 - 10"C, I headed out this morning and found a few:

Notice some of the stem bases are quite blue.
I was hoping to get some in situ shots here, but my freezing fingers had their full time trying to pick these. I simply couldn't operate the camera with such stiff fingers! So you'll have to cope with the dull photo instead.
Anyway, I believe this is the latest in the year I've ever found liberty caps in Norway. Going to go out again to check a few spots over the weekend if the conditions seem favourable. Hoping for my first December pick ever....

I came to think about this temperature thing, do you have springs in that area? The temperature being down to -8c kinda baffles me, but in case there would be groundwater rising and keeping the ground warm it wouldn't be that strange.

For a period of five days it was hardly over zero, just a few hours of +1 in the day. These are temperatures measured at the downtown weather station, which is just by the sea side. I believe it is generally a bit lower temperature at the site where these were found, as it is in a valley, where during high pressure it is usually coldest in the bottom.
My thought about this is that usually, the season is ending around late October/ early November. This particular season however, has been strange, and the fruits I found just prior to the frost, were kind of more like the season start, rather than the end. So it could be that as the mycelium was healthy and triggered to fruit, it simply just "hibernated" with primordia and all until the conditions became favourable again. Whereas in "normal" seasons the mycelium would, at this time of the year, already be spent and weak, and more susceptible to frost.

I saw a few libs last week on a lawn outside my work, spotted them from a window. They were just as black as yours. And that was just a couple of days after the snow melted. "Dead" but still standing up.
Most of these I picked yesterday were actually in healthy condition, if you expand the picture and look closely. It is just badly lit being taken indoors without flash. Most of them were quite fresh.

do it said: I came to think about this temperature thing, do you have springs in that area? The temperature being down to -8c kinda baffles me, but in case there would be groundwater rising and keeping the ground warm it wouldn't be that strange.
No springs at all. The layer of top soil is also generally very thin in my region, often not more than a few meters down to the bedrock. On the other hand, being close to the coast and the Gulf Stream, the winters are usually quite mild compared to the inlands.

Crazy picture there, and crazy find, Anglerfish!
I also went back to my place a few times during late October & early November (hard frost came here much earlier) but I didn't find any, despite that some two weeks of mild weather followed.
It's interesting to read now that it wasn't too dumb of an idea, after all. LOL
