HOUSTON — Dang bros — you got busted!
Brothers Minh and Tuan Dang have been arrested and charged with selling the dangerous synthetic drug "Kush" from their smoke shops. These arrests, and several others are part of a new initiative by the Houston Police Department to crack down on the city's Kush craze.
Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, joined by the Texas Attorney General and city officials, won a restraining order Tuesday from a Harris County civil court against three Houston-area smoke shops and their owners to stop the sale of synthetic marijuana, known on the streets as “kush.”
Based on a tip to the Houston Police Department, the three stores, known as Spice Boutique and Spice Inc., reportedly supplied some of the kush that led to a massive overdose in Hermann Park in June. At least 16 people were hospitalized.
The designer drug is typically manufactured overseas and marketed as a “safe” and “legal” alternative to marijuana.
"Just because Kush, or synthetic marijuana is being sold out of a store front, it is still illegal. And let me be clear, we will be prosecuting anyone who sells this to the fullest extent of the law," District Attorney Devon Anderson of Harris County said.
Synthetic marijuana is not marijuana at all, but a dried leafy substance that is sprayed with powerful, added-in hallucinogenic chemicals that are dangerous and highly-addictive to the user. It is often sold in colorful packets, with flavors such as strawberry and blueberry, in order to appeal to children, and is the second most abused drug by high school students, after marijuana itself. It is also illegal in Texas.
"So we're not just going to be focusing on the 16 and other who are falling out in Hermann park," Turner said. "We are focusing on those entities, who surely know what they're doing, who are selling this nonsense, earning their dollars, going home and leaving the problem for everybody else to fix."
Tuesday’s filing asks the court to shut down the three stores for one year for selling synthetic marijuana in violation of Texas law. In addition to the restraining order, County and State officials are seeking civil penalties against the owners for up to $20,000 per violation.
“The mass overdose in Hermann Park in June is a dramatic example of why we must re-double our efforts in the fight against these dangerous substances,” said County Attorney Ryan. “My office will continue to work with law enforcement, the Mayor and city officials to send the message that businesses that choose to sell these substances will face the consequences, including shutting down their business if necessary.”
A Houston smoke shop owner, who wanted to stay anonymous, told NewsFix people like the Dang brothers give his business a bad name.
"My store is based on tobacco and hookahs," he said. "Most of these stores, they sell the hookahs, tobacco and stuff at very cheap price. They're making most of the money on the selling of synthetic drugs. That hurts my store. That hurts the legit businesses who want to sell the tobacco."
And besides the bottom line, there's a bigger reason why this owner claims he stays away from Kush.
"Those synthetic drugs and all that are killing people," he said.
Hopefully with these new efforts, Kush use will finally be crushed in the city of Houston.
Judge Joseph “Tad” Halbach of the 333rd Judicial District Court of Harris County entered Tuesday’s temporary restraining order. A hearing in the case has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Calling it synthetic marijuana is retarded. I never heard of a synthetic plant. Like calling LSD selective synthetic seritonin.

Bail set for brothers accused in Kush sweep
August 12, 2016

Two brothers accused of selling Kush and other illegal drugs out of three Houston smoke shops will remain in jail on $400,000 bail, a judge ruled Friday.
If they do make bail, state District Judge Jan Krocker signed orders barring 42-year-old Minh Dang and 46-year-old Tuan from working in similar shops.
Minh Dang, known to the clerks of his stores as "Mike," appeared before the judge in an orange jail uniform. Tuan Dang, known as "Josh," was still going through the intake process at the jail.
Both were arrested with four store clerks this week after a massive investigation that included GPS trackers on the brothers' vehicles and investigators digging through the brothers' trash. The clerks were arrested on minor charges, with the brothers' alleged criminal enterprise as the main target.
Both men have been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity after prosecutors said they built a small empire selling synthetic drugs, including synthetic cannabinoids and increasing amounts of synthetic Viagra, at their smoke shops.
Assistant Harris County District Attorney Lance Long detailed a long investigation apparently engineered to not only charge the brothers with crimes but seize the assets bought by the proceeds.
The Harris County Attorney's Office and the Texas Attorney General Office is also involved in filing asset forfeiture lawsuits against two men. Investigators seized of hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets, including 30 gold bars.
Authorities said the smoke shops reportedly supplied some of the drugs responsible for the June overdoses in an area of Hermann Park known as Kush Corner.
Last month, a Chronicle investigation found growing use of the synthetic drug - and at least five deaths - in the Houston area.
The drugs, sometimes incorrectly known as synthetic marijuana, are a mixture of leaves covered with chemicals to synthesize the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. In addition to synthetic marijuana, they are sold under the names Spice and K2.
Because the chemical compounds continue endlessly changing, it has been difficult to prosecute cases for selling or possessing the drugs until recent legislation.
Norm Silverman, a defense lawyer for Minh Dang, argued in court several points of law, including that it was not a crime before the new law went into effect in September. After hearing his arguments, Krocker set the matter for a hearing in 10 days.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has said authorities are focusing on the people profiting from the illegal drugs.

This is about synthetic marijuana some synth noid blend no doubt. It is weird phrasing though.
LSD is synthetic LSA you could say but saying its sythetic morning glories or HBWR would seem strange.

People are idiots for making the blends as strong as they do.
They need to be AT LEAST of a quarter of the strength on the whole.
Many blends are so intense one moderate hit can cause a massive OD.

Ehh most people feel since it is sold in a retail store it's ok to use, also at one point legal. Same thing with parents that are ok with giving their <18 year old children adderal and oxy's.. If the doctor prescribed it, it has to be ok..

When I got out of jail, I was somewhere between discovery green and a parking garage where there was some homeless guy face down on the ground motionless with a lighter in his hand. I thought about stopping but there were already some people trying to help. I think I must've been related to this kush corner thing
