Cactus cactus cactus yoooooooo
    #23535212 - 08/12/16 03:26 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

How come that bitch skinny at the waist??
I guess it's all the less than perfect winter growth?
Is there anything I can do to help the skinny part fatten up? I don't want the top getting too tall an heavy then breaking at the weak point...
Is a Trich pachanoi.

Sorry to break it to you but it will never fatten up.

I would remove the fat top part and reroot it - it should grow into a nicely shaped plant.

Like ferrel mentioned it will not thicken (much). Spanishfly gave a good suggestion about just topping it and rerooting the top and the bottom will grow thick and nice. Another option is just letting it grow and propping it up with a stake. That thin section will not thicken up to be uniform but it will thicken slightly and in the future pups will help support it and the core will become more woody preventing the cactus from snapping although still possible.

I agree.

The skinny part is etiolated growth from not getting enough light at some point in its life, do what Spanish said and you'll be golden brother.

Nice to see you around again Zombi, thought you died.

Right now it seems to grow well with a healthy rootstock.
I would wait and cut it in autumn when the plant shows no more new growth. It will callus and grow new roots during dormancy /winter and show up as a refreshed individual next season.

Callus, root and repot the middlepart also, and keep the old stem potted as it is. Chances are high you have a few clones /pups show up until next summer.

The best time to reroot a plant is NOW - when it is in full growth.  New roots will form quickly.  Not a good idea to leave it until winter, when growth slows to nothing - growth of roots will also slow to nothing.

Oh, with cacti I assumed roots to grow mostly when the plant is dehydrating over winter /dormant. I didn't know that the opposite it the fact, thanks for the info! I'm still a gardening-newbie.
My thought was to keep the plant growing as it is for a little while to make best use of the healthy rootstock it still has. At least for this season, the fat tip looks still small to me. When cut and potted now it's a plant of two inches.

Oh man, Even if you're right about this I'm just going to hope you're wrong, my plans were to try to clone and root pretty much all of my trichs over winter, you don't think that's a good idea?

I think it is a very bad idea - incidentally so do all of my texts.  Growth is slowed to virtually nothing in winter - which is also the season when our plants are most prone to rot.  I think you are tempting fate to leave cut surfaces exposed at this time.

Having said that I have had to remove rotted portions of a plant in winter before now, and the healthy remnant did slowly callous and root successfully the following spring.  But that was in extremis - winter would never be my choice of season to perform cutting, repotting, or grafting - all operations where good growth helps the plant to overcome a traumatic procedure.

But I think winter is an excellent time to raise seedlings with artificial heat and light - wonderful to see life spring up in those short dismal days.

I live in Canada and i keep my cactus under CFL during the winter and I've had tons of success taking cuttings in the middle of winter... They grow/root slow but it definitely is very possible to do.

And ok if y'all don't think it'll thicken up I'll make a cutting or two from it and leave the thick base to pup. I just wanted to keep this one as a nice column but whatever I have more cactus than I can count so I'll just grow many many more as perfect columns.

Yea I put them outside and they got sun burnt cuz I thought maybe they wouldn't need to harden off going from a 600w metal halide to outside. But yea I was wrong and they suffered for more than a month. Just starting to look happy again now, pretty much wasted the whole summers explosive growth.. But whatever I'll put them back under the light in a month and keep em growing all winter.

I lost 25% of my all my lophs to some fucking god dam bugs

Don´t forget that an overcast day outside is brighter than any artificial lighting.

Any idea what kind of fucking god dam bugs you had?  So you can take steps to prevent a recurrence?

As I said I have rooted cuttings in winter when forced to do so.
But I would not recommend anyone to choose the period when they are naturally resting after their summer growth as a preferred time to expect them to grow fresh roots.  Neither do any of the published cactus growers.
But they are tough bastards and can take all sorts of abuse.

I agree fly.. your natural climate plays a big part.. I live where it's forever growing.. Canada isn't in that climate zone
