What should I do once my spawn bags are fully colonized?
    #23534938 - 08/12/16 01:54 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hello. I got my 5 grain spawn bags and spore syringes about a week ago. I inoculated the four bags, and today, I took a look at them and saw white patches growing in 3 of 4 of the bags. The fourth bag is just a little bit slow, I'm sure that it will catch up soon. Surprisingly, the two bags that I inoculated with 5cc are showing signs of colonizing sooner than the ones that I used the full 10cc on. Is there a reason for that? And now I need to know what to do when my bags are fully colonized, too. The website that I'm dealing with says that I need a storage container bin, and then I need to buy casing from them, put the colonized substrate on the bottom of the container, and cover it with the casing. I think that I'm supposed to put a fluorescent light in the box to help the mushrooms grow, but the company didn't send me any instructions, so I don't know for sure. There's a HEPA filter tube that I'm supposed to use with the box, but people on The Shroomery have told me that's a dumb idea, and I need to make it into a shotgun style container. Others have told me to get coco coir cakes. I don't know for sure what to do, though. What's the best way for me to do this without screwing everything up? Any help would be much appreciated, I just want to do this right since I've gotten this far already

Good looking out. I appreciate it. What do you think of my progress? I'm keeping them in a box with a fan blowing into it, and I can keep the temperature around 75 degrees. Should I do anything different? I'm a first time mushroom grower, so I just don't want to make any major screw-ups and throw away my progress

You can just sit them on a shelf as long as you're not sweating or wearing a hoodie. No need for a box or fan.

You might want to look into agar. Almost all syringes harbor bacteria and such. You might get a practice run out of these in bulk (or fruit the bag). You can do cased grains (trays) in a shotgun fruiting chamber or skip that junk and go straight bulk tubs.

I would like to grow in bulk tubs with these spawn bags, if it's not super prone to contamination. Also, I was told that I have to keep the temperature between 70-75F, but I live in a small apartment that's prone to becoming very hot during the day, probably around 100 degrees, and that's why I run the air conditioner all day and keep the fan blowing in the box. I was told in a previous post to check out pf tek, and agar was mentioned. This sounds like a great idea for my next experiment, but I want to see how this one turns out before I get too invested in doing two styles of grow at once. That's a good way to mess things up, at least for me, since I'm a noob. So, I guess that I should ask my question differently, to be less confusing. If you were in my position, with a fully colonized spawn bag, wanting to do a bulk grow in a storage bin, how would you go about doing that? Would you use coco coir cakes, or casing, or both?

JPEG is THE image format. You just didn't copy and paste it over.

It's not fully colonized.... But it also makes me wonder why buy a spawn bag if you don't know what to do with it?

I know it's not fully colonized. Not even close. I'm just glad that the bags aren't duds. I thought that I knew what I was doing when I bought this kit, but people on The Shroomery have told me that there's better ways to do things than what the company told me, and they never bothered to put the directions in the damn box, and then they wouldn't respond to my kind request for some instructions. So now I'm here, humbly asking the real professionals what the best course of action is when I get to the point where my spawn bag has been fully colonized, so I'm not clueless going into the next phase

Very nice. I'm going to check into that. I really appreciate the push in the right direction
