How to seal the end of a braided rope.
    #23534977 - 08/12/16 02:04 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

With much trial and error, i have finally figured out how to do this.

This only works with braided oil-based rope like Poly rope or nylon rope.

Heres what you need:

Sharp pair of scissors
lighter
a wind-free area
tape ruler

Heres what i did:

Step 1: Take your rope and tape ruler and measure out a piece of rope in the lenght u want.

Step 2: Tie a tight knot in the rope where u want to cut. Pull both ends as tight as u can. In the end of this procedure, the knot will be waste.

Step 3: Take your left hand (if u are left handed, use your right hand) and pitch hard on the place on the rope u wanna cut nearest to the knot you made. Pitch as if you are squeezing the fibers of the rope together.

Step 4: Take your scissors with your right hand and cut about 1/16" away from your still-pitching rope near the knot u made. Smooth gradual cuts work best (unless u can cut it one stroke).

Step 5: While still pitching hard on the rope, head to your wind-free area where your lighter is waiting for you.

Step 6: Hold your still-pitched rope end straight up and light your lighter. Use the edge of the yellow flame to singe the edge of the frayed material. There should be a small amount of frayed material to singe. Careful to not burn your finger. Try to singe all in one go since the striker on the lighter will get hot, preventing a relight of the lighter.

Step 7: After u get the edge of the frayed material, unpitch the rope. Examine rope end for any frayed material that needs singing. Wait for lighter to cool and then repeat singing step as needed to complete the rope end.

Step 8: Let rope end cool. Mission complete!

Any questions?

EDIT: it appears that making a knot in the rope helps make a tighter sealed end of the roope. It has been added a step in the procedure list.

Sorry this took mush (edit: much) trial and error. You should have just asked how to do it. I'm not trying to downplay you figuring it out, but it's fairly common knowledge. Depending on the size of the rope what works even better is using a soldering iron to cut through it. It seals at the same time.

I didnt even think to ask or research how to do it, but i figured out a method.

If they made a sharp blade for soldering irons, i would totally go for that.

Yeah, I've got this monster, probably 50 year old, soldering iron that has like a spade bit that can easily cut a 1/2 rope in one shot.

I will if I can find the soldering iron. Most of my shop tools are still packed up. I do some digging around and take pics when I find it

tape rope where you need to cut it, burn the end after cutting it.
