First Mushroom Hunt!
    #23534280 - 08/12/16 10:37 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

First off, I'm new to the forum. Secondly, this is my very first hunt. The name should give away where I'm located. Before I decided to take a trip to go hunting, I did a lot of research. As of now, we're finishing up monsoon season and there was a lot of moisture on the mountains. I happened to go yesterday up in the mountains (9,000+ elevation) to look for shrooms. I found TONS of fly agarics, but took only a few, and I happened to find this one that I seem to not be able to identify as I'm not too experienced.

  • Habitat:
Decaying wood, believe to be from pine tree as I was surrounded mostly by that (Catalina Mountains, AZ) 9,000+ elevation

  • Gills:
Brownish black where spores would be located

  • Stem:
golden brownish to white color, thin stem

  • Cap:
Golden brown on top, round of course, convex

  • Spore print color:
I'd get this information if I knew how to do that? I'm sure it's simple..

  • Bruising:
Don't seem to see bruising (might be missing it as I ass definitely more than 1 color)

  • Other information:
I'd like to know if these are hallucinogenic, poisonous, or just flat out safe to eat

I don't think they are. I looked up what shrooms mainly grow in AZ, those aren't on the list, on top of that I went kinda towards night time and found them once it got dark, they didn't glow like it's said to do.

Welcome to the Shroomery!! Check out this guide to finding Active mushrooms to give you a better idea of what to look for while you're out https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12412007, there's also a guide that includes a state-by-state list of active species per state.

What you've got there are some pretty special little mushies. While they aren't active, or even edible for that matter, they are bio-luminescent!!

The gills actually emit a blue-green color in low-light conditions

:wellholyshit:

Oh and to get a spore print, clip the stem as close to the cap as possible without touching or damaging the gills. Take the cap and place it gills down on a sheet of paper or foil. Leave it sit overnight (or longer if you'd like) and in the morning you'll have a nice spore print.

:goodluck:

So in other words, this isn't a hallucinogenic mushroom, nor even safe to eat? As you did say special, just what exactly makes it special? The fact that it's bio-luminescent?

I believe I found a psilocybe cubensis mushroom during my hunt, but it was WAY too immature. I ended up throwing it away. Wasn't even the size of my entire pinkie finger. Probably not half to be exact. I shouldn't have even picked it in the first place.

What are some things I should look for while trying to find a mushroom with hallucinogenic properties?

Will Fly Agaric make me have a trip? What's the proper dosage? What's the proper way to take it without puking my guts out?

different people react differently to Fly Agaric, much depends on your own body, and how much muscarine, muscimol, and ibotenic acid is in the mushroom. I have had fly agaric many times, and never had a bad experience but i believe thats because the mushrooms i tend to harvest, tend to also have lower amounts of muscarine....but def do your research, educate yourself properly...you wont regret it.

What's the proper way to take them? I've read a lot about the trip, I just wanted to confirm that it would make you. I have giant ones.

From my wrist to my middle finger, it's 7 1/2 inches long

Also, even though I was suppose to wait longer, I did the spore print and came out yellow. Didn't wanna wait too long since it was already identified

you didn't find a cube in AZ but there's a possibility you found some other active.  post pics of any you find.  people here like to look at mushrooms.

don't store your finds in plastic bags; it hastens rotting.  and yes, he said they were special because they're reportedly bioluminescent but i've sat in a closet for a half hour and never saw anything in specimens i collected during two consecutive autumns.  it felt like a practical joke i was playing on myself.

but yes, it's a real thing; there are awesome pics of bioluminescent fungi here and elsewhere on the web.

But my big question now is how do I properly prep a Fly Agaric so I can experience a trip from it? I'd like to know before they rot. Once I'm told, I'd start immediately.

Correct, eat those mushrooms and you'll have a bad time.

Cubes are absent from the list for Arizona in the state-by-state guide mentioned earlier in this thread. Therefore, you did not and will not find a cube growing wild in Arizona. They just don't grow there, naturally.

Again, Check out this guide to finding Active mushrooms to give you a better idea of what to look for while you're out https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12412007, there's also a guide that includes a state-by-state list of active species per state..

No idea about Fly Agaric.

What relic said, use paper instead of plastic. Otherwise your mushies will really turn to mush.

P.S. - If a shroomery member offers helpful advice in response to a question you've posted, and you continue to post without first consulting the provided resources. You're gonna have a bad time.

Keep, in mind I am not a Trusted Identifier, and as always have your finds properly IDed before any kind of consumption...with that being said, those do seem to be A. Muscaria, atleast possibly American Variance, so...Ideally, this prep method is targeted at minimizing Ibotenic Acid levels, this is the compound most people are referring to when they say they are poisonous.  Ibotenic Acid is converted to muscimol through a process called decarboxylation, which can be accomplished through indirect heat, such as low heat baking with plenty of air circulation, until they are shroom chips.  BUT my preferred method is to sun-dry them, I think it has something to do with UV light, but im not 100% sure. anyways the less I.A. the better...unfortunately there is nothing you can do about the muscarine, which can cause profuse sweating, salivating, and nausea + vommiting but you should know that within the first hour of taking it.  some people like to sip on a glass of milk, while taking this, they say it helps with the nausea....I normally start with 8 grams, but I also tend to NOT go balls deep on a first go around, as i reccomend start small work your way up, you can always stop ahead, but you cant turn around.

Ill try and find my posts from the past about A. Muscaria, and link them here...gime a few

Thank you for your knowledge though on this. I think I'll just throw them away and go back up there, get more fresh ones. These seem to be getting very gross, with a terrible smell now. But at the same time, I also feel like I should strictly try finding something like Psilocybe mescaleroensis since my whole intention of finding a mushroom is to hallucinate.

If somebody could give more knowledge on a Psilocybe mescaleroensis, that'd be great! Always love learning new things

meant to show u this, last seasons haul from my Amanita patch...been dried and curing for 1 year, plan on consuming some sometime in the fall.

If you continue on your Amanita hunts, the caps are considered to be much better and worth while than the stems, (dead chewy weight)

what they said.

and you won't 'trip' off of these.  you'll feel inebriated at best and ill at worst.

ninja'd and you now realize you're not going to trip off of these.  good luck.

So, question is, is there any active shrooms in AZ? If you're saying they won't make you trip, yet they're technically psychedelics, then how does that play off? I don't understand you wouldn't have a trip.. I might as well start my own colony of something..

Clearly being ignored.

That's okay.
