Oh mine gets wrinkly and cracked like that at the bottom if I water it too frequently
I've learned to let it kinda flatten out and look thirsty before I water again

Here's my plant back in March before I gave it a big pot with a mix pretty similar to fly's

Was taken last month, has been in new pot for about a month at this point

No pics of the side unfortunately

Your mix might be too water retentive and you might water too frequently

What kind of soil mix do you use for those beautiful cacti?

Good advise here. I always let my plants flatten or deflate before watering again. I'm not sure why people water them so much. I understand everyone wants to take good care of them but these plants are native to some of the most bone dry deserts in the world. They are used to dehydration then a good rain coming and they store water.

That brownish skin at the bottom is normal. That part is usually buried on plants so you don't really see it

Thanks for the kind words guys,
VorHeez that's all one plant in different stages, but I use a mix of 5/4/1 limestone screenings(washed)/perlite/worm castings
real simple, if I ever find a source I will be replacing perlite with pumice, and using limestone in much lower quantities.

I can find lava rock - which is a porous volcanic rock like pumice - dead easily here - they ship it in from Lanzarote which is made of the stuff.

Lava rock works well and is in abundance here as well as pumice. With lava rock I have to crush it though because it come in much bigger chunks.

Yeah I can't find small chunks of pumice and I'm going to keep not crushing rocks for as long as I can

Does marble have calcium in it like limestone does?
