Wouldn't the apostrophe indicate possession? The business belongs to the man. Without the ' it is mans which is simply an incorrect plural.
I believe it is about ensuring the idea that if you were not involved in said business then it does not concern you, it is not yours, so butt out. If you do something and someone knows that wasn't there, that's too many people.
