Ready-To-Grow Box Cake Transfer

Hello, I managed to get my hands on some really cheap ready-to-grow boxes. The problem is because they are a bit older, the cake has consolidated and there is a lot of space on the bottom and sides of the box. Now out of experience I know that the pins will grow in the spaces on the side and bottom and will be impossible to harvest. Now My question is if it would be a good idea to remove the cake out of the growbox before dunking it. Covering it in new vermiculite and growing it in a bigger box.. Would this increase my chance for contamination so much that it would be a bad idea or not? What also bothers me when I read documentation about growing shrooms is that people seem to be working super sterile when fruiting a jar. But when they take the cake out of the jar they don't wear gloves anymore and sometimes even just put it on a shelve or table just like that. Is this because when the cake is ready, the contamination doesn't happen as easily?? thank you

Yes fully colonized cakes are contam resistant, fruiting is not a sterile process. Do what you said and build a proper sgfc

Hey thank you for your quick answer. I had another idea that might be a bit to quick to start with before getting used to the pf tek.
At home we keep a compost pile. This is really fertile compost with introduced worms and everything. I was thinking that after these cakes are exhausted to maybe crumble them up and layer them with compost and hay in a shady place in the garden. Would this tek work?
Thanks

Yes, you can throw every spent substrate in a compost pile. Hell even contaminated ones. They will fruit whenever the climate is good though so it's not something you can count on for consistent fruits. It's just better than throwing them in the trash.
