Hi all, grateful for this forum - never realized how fun it is getting to know nearby mushrooms. Found a few of this type that looks like a Conocybe. Can anyone confirm what I've got here?
Habitat: Found near the base of a poplar tree - in a deciduous forest with Poplar, Birch, minimal conifers. Northern Alberta (near Edmonton)
Gills: Dark Brown/ Charcoal colour - inky looking, unattached to stem
Stem: 2-3" long, 1/8" Diameter, white, texture, hollow, thin
Cap: Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
Spore print color: dark brown/charcoal
Bruising: No noticable bruising when stem of cap is cut
Other information: No detectable smell

It's a coprinoid of some sort. You'll be having a plate full of black mush soon.

I'm glad I got the request right. Actually now that I think of it, if you don't mind, what were any giveaways that I missed?

About the mushroom not being Conocybe or? Anyhow, Conocybes usually have orange colored (varies from cream colored to brown) gills that drop brown to reddish-brown spore print. Also your mushrooms seems a bit "big" compared to the Conocybes I've observed in the wild and generally have characteristics that Conocybes don't have. Sorry for a bit bad answer, too early in here for the brainwork.
