Highs, lows, and in between 1

From the perspective of functioning, it would seem that in between is better. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. An idiot savant is still an idiot. Of course some live a lifetime to die a frozen mummy on Mt. Everest, did they live the high or were they idiots? Maybe they should have found a better guide or sherpa? Imagine when all that adrenaline of making the summit turns ugly and the realization that death is near hits.
Why the fuck didn't I take up scuba diving?

I expect when the hour of death arrives, assuming we aren’t in some horrible catastrophe, but have some moments to experience the process, that what will count most is not our life story, (assuming we don’t have lot’s of ‘unfinished business’ and resentments) but more our fearlessness, curiosity, focus, and ability to stay present.
Our stories are always in & about the past anyway. Of course how we live now influences the attitude we can muster when the going gets tough.
But if you hypothetical mountain climber, carved his splinters out with a box cutter like yourself, he may have a good character for death. After all eventually there must be a last climb.

When facing my moment of death with the head on logging truck recently, I can say that calmness was perhaps disturbing yet comforting. Still, I slowed down and laid on the horn and finally the driver realized he was about to head on me and nearly jackknifed to get back in his lane.

the in-between is arguably the best state, for efficient, long-term functioning. prolonged highs are often hard to achieve, and generally require additional input(s) and/or lead, ultimately, to a state of low, making re-achieving the in-between a delayed process. the lows, unless one finds the "humor" or complete care-free state within, lead to equal or worse states of the low; an advantage would be the sweetness of the highs, or the ease with which they may be obtained, comparatively.

i disagree with "our stories are always in....the past"
a finished story is in the past and able to be shared. an unfolding story, or an incomplete story, is [in] the present

Mania sucks, I can attest to that. I've had extreme ups and downs my whole life as far back as I can remember. Mom has it too. It's easy to be hated by a lot of people but you're forced to accept it and rise back from the ashes every time. It's been fun at least. If someone wants to label me an idiot I don't blame them, but they can fuck right off with the rest of the normies with sour looks on their faces.

If we don't cling with super-glue like attachment to our highs or lows, we can always walk the middle road.

His middle is not her middle...
Someone who's extremely manic doesn't even really know where middle is, nor do they care.
