Yellow Fly Agaric??
    #23532446 - 08/11/16 06:39 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys! I am very new to this form and hope that I'm posting my inquiry in the right place. I apologize in advanced

I found these growing out on the acreage I live. I'm located in Alberta, Canada and came across these beauties growing in my back yard. I'm certain these are Amanita Muscaria Var. Guessowii, but you can't be too careful.

The gills appear to be clustered tightly and are Adnate. The younger specimen is bulbous shaped and in larger more fully grown are slightly concave with a deeper shade of yellow-orange towards the middle. The stem is white with a white skirt-like ring.

I don't have a microscope to make a spore print, but I've heard that there are other ways it can be done. (I'll have to do some research!)

If anyone can verify this species, please let me know! Thanks a million! ^^

@cotafilipe  Thank you for your reply! I agree! They are physically identical to Fly Agaric in everyway (as far as I can tell), but they vary from a deep yellow-orange to light yellow in colour. I might've hit the jackpot and this is my very first mushroom identification!

Here's a picture of a more convex shaped agaric and it's gills:

If you plan to eat those first do a little research in the forum. Most of the people who have tried it say that the "high" is not that pleasant, more like a drunk felling and not a psychedelic experience like you would have with psilocybe sp.. Also, it is highly likely that you will have some unpleasant side effects such as felling sick and vomiting, although most of these can be overcome by proper mushroom preparation...

cheers

Thank you so much for the help!! It definitely helps to have plenty of prior knowledge before taking this kind of journey.
I've discovered that some have very positive effects, while others have very negative experiences and have even been hospitalized due to convulsions and even comas.

I'll have to try it out very sparingly. I am also nervous about whether or not it's fly agaric, but I am a total N00b and really need that extra security.
What is a TI? Maybe they can affirm whether or not it's dangerous.

I really appreciate the help! It turns out there's a perseid meteor shower tonight, so today might be a fun time! I just hope I can ID them 100% correctly.

And sorry for being a paranoid newbie! Many people do develop nausea, but there haven't been any reported deaths as of yet so I should be okay with a moderate amount. To counteract this, people often dry them, put them in tea, or smoke them. Some species of agaric contain deadly neurotoxins and consuming plenty of garlic beforehand would deter those effects.

I've also read that there are some look-alikes in the agaric family that can be toxic, but non of them resembled this mushroom.

The only two I could find are amanita var. guessoni, amanita frostiana and amanita flavoconia.

They all seem almost identical, but one key difference is that guessoni has a light yellow to yellow-orange cap with a white stem.

Frostiana has a yellow to cream coloured stem that forms yellow powder or flakes at the base of the stalk.

Flavoconia has a darker red to orange cap with yellow spots on the cap.

All of these mushrooms have the same psychoactive properties, though very little is known about their edibility. If ANYONE knows more about the toxicity of these certain species, please post. I'm sure a small sample of one of these wouldn't kill me, but you never know.

As far as the effects of muscimol, I'm sure it would be interesting to say the least. Many people who had good experiences with this substance had a very positive frame of mind. I am a very happy-go-lucky person working at Starbucks, going to school, and overall enjoying every second of my life. I believe my positive outlook on the world and life in general would make a positive change in many of the experiences I might have.

To play it safe, I'll probably start with a little piece to see if it gives me any kind of effects. If I experience any negative ones, I'll stay away from them.

Thank you again for your advice! I appreciate it greatly!:smirk::mushroom2:

I've also heard that the skin on the surface doesn't contain any of the toxins that make you sick, though I'm iffy about that one. Worth looking into though!
