Who here has seen Inherent Vice 1

I came across this on the Directv guide. Never heard of it but this summary obviously caught my eye:
A dope-smoking private detective (Joaquin Phoenix) navigates a psychedelic world of surfers, rockers, stoners, LAPD cops and more as he looks for a missing ex-girlfriend and her wealthy boyfriend.

Pretty deep cast, too.
Got a future showing on the DVR to do list. Is this shit as good as it sounds?

I liked it. It's cool but really slow. Get super high if you watch it.

One day we'll make an GOAT movie list, briefcase of drugs, food, drinks and roll a 24 hour movie party without leaving the house. Different rules for each movie.
Belly will be on the list. You have to have a blunt in your hand for the whole movie on that one.

Speaking of, I need to watch Belly again pretty soon. Been a couple of years since I popped that one in.
Probably my favorite movie intro of all-time too

Inherent Vice was pretty good.
I really like Joaquin Phoenix though.
"I'm Still Here" was one of the funniest "mock"umentaries i've seen in a long time. I was dying laughing the whole time.
And I just watched Belly the other week and I really was smoking blunts the whole time lol

The casting and story were both weak. Another boring drug movie.

It helps to have read the book prior. There were so many characters and so much weird interplay between each one that is hard to capture in film. I thought it did the book justice though.

Watched it last night. Tried to drink a few beers and took a couple of rips, but man this headache was fucking with me. So admittedly I wasn't as into it as I wanted to be.
But yeah I'll have to try it again at some point. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed and that plot was as complicated as a plot as I've ever seen I think
I sat through the duration and I still really have zero clue what the fuck I saw or what happened

I liked the cast and vibe and wanted to like this movie, but it was kind of weak and aimless and dull ultimately. I got the sense it could have been a great book, but the story was just too much for one movie and the pacing suffered imo
I really like phoenix tho

Yeah I went over to IMDB and checked out the Inherent Vice message board, and a lot of them were saying that it's the type of film that needs to be seen literally several times to actually pick up on a lot of the things that were happening.
I could definitely see that the film had/has some potential -- but yeah you're right, it did feel really aimless (although I do think that was somewhat intentional) and was a little boring & slow in stretches.
I think it would be better with a few more repeat viewings...but I don't know if I liked it enough the first time around to invest another 5 hours on it for another couple of viewings.

Pynchon is good. i've read Gravity's Rainbow. it was the best book ever. i'd read it as well. i plan on reading all his books, because i wanna reading like all of an author's repertoire because then i can say i did it; but moreover because it's also immense, and also some shit that is truly easy to read.
some books like to do that. i find Infinite Jest also good for that. you're looking at a book that has both the sense of constancy in it's ability to confound the reader with bullshit, but it's just that, bullshit, literally in IJ, it's meant to make the more intelligible reader to skip the notions of drug-names and the literary fuckery, and just read quickly.
same goes for Pynchon. read it quickly, and avoid taking it too seriously, and it ends up being awesome. otherwise, it won't be as enjoyable. the pastiche is too perplexing to truly understand in realistic terms, thus trumps the imagination, lest one can think of it like a cartoon or some kind of loony film. -- TL;DR, read it quickly (not at a clip, this isn't Stephen King burgers and fries) and it's immense. Inherent Vice is probably just as confusing as any of his other books, and Gravity's Rainbow....
but point is: i know it's probably really quite good. but probably quite a loose cannon.
