they look like they're starving for some moisture and air.
did you build your SGFC correctly? holes in a 2 inch grid on ALL six sides including the bottom and top. air has the flow through the perlite for the perlite to be effective at all. can't just sit in the bottom of a tub.

Yes, I most certainly did.. it's built just as you described.. I work a lot of hours but I spray them really well, about 3-4 times a day. Maybe I should spray them more heavily?
Thanks for pointing that out... much appreciated.

how many cakes do you have in your SGFC, it performs best when relatively full. if you only have a few cakes and the SGFC is pretty large sized then you can end up with caps that get pale like that. you can try leaving the cake in a saucer of water for a few hours while you're home then removing the saucer after a few hours. it will absorb water but not over saturate the cake. still keep the surface moist by misting a couple to a few times a day as needed.

That's what the problem is then.. I have lots of other cakes that are 100% colonized, but was letting them sit a bit longer before birthing them. Maybe I should go ahead and birth them now just for the sake of the ones that are in the SGFC now..

probably wouldn't hurt. but if that box fan is running or on at any time that's what your problem is right there. and why the caps will always look pale and dry

Okay, thank you very much for the tip. All 4 cakes are currently sitting in saucers. I'll leave them there for a couple hours.. remove them right before bed tonight.
Also, I have had the fan on low to create some kind of airflow in here. Otherwise, there is an air conditioner in the window that's on for about 12 hours out of the day. It doesn't blow at them, it's about 6 feet away... very small air conditioner. I hope that doesn't affect them too much.

Any forced air or fan in the room with the SGFC is a problem

Initially I had it in a closet where there was no moving air whatsoever.. the lighting wasn't sufficient enough tho and I had to setup outside of the closet.. looks like I'm going to have to figure something else out...

Load that bad boy up next time. Looks like it could fit 18.
Protip. You can use upside down jar lids to rest your cakes on. That way you're not cutting foil discs or letting pooled water in open air cause bottom pinning or contams. Cheers and best of luck, good job, and keep at it.

Thanks for the advice, Adden. You know, I actually had them on their lids for awhile, one of the cakes started pinning at the very bottom though, so I decided to cut some aluminum foil squares. That was just yesterday actually. Also, hopefully I can get this question answered without making a new post: One of my cakes is fruiting much more than the rest. The fruits are extending out towards the other cakes. I don't want to stunt those fruits by letting them run into the other cakes. My question is, will they change direction on their own, or is it best that I move the cakes when needed to prevent mushroom collisions?

PS. It's absolutely extraordinary how quickly these little mushrooms grow. I leave for work, come home, and they're very noticeably bigger. Same thing when I goto bed at night.. I wake up, there's a huge difference. It's such a fun hobby. I don't know why I never thought to cultivate my own years and years ago...

My cakes are litterally 2 inches apart max. I get mushroom collisions all the time. I dont think that it stunts growth but sometimes two will bond together.
