Don't be afraid to shake WBS early!
    #23528286 - 08/10/16 01:47 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So it's been a while since my friend grew.

From the beginning he's soaked WBS 12 hours, simmered it the following day and then PC'd it in quart jars for 90 minutes.
A day later after fully cooling they get shot up with 1-2cc of MS.

We've ready many times to shake at 20%, 30%, etc...
Personally, he always shakes after first squirting in the spores - and I know some suggest against that.

There's been times where the WBS just seemed to take forever to colonize but he'd wait it out until it looked to be 20-30% before shaking again.

The current attempt was taking a while, or he got impatient...
This time he didn't want to wait and shook all of his jars when they only appeared to be 5-10% colonized.
After shaking you couldn't even tell there was any mycelium at all!

It's the next day now and all of the jars are at least 1/2 covered.
I want to stress "covered", not "colonized".
No-doubt there's more in the center that needs to colonize but we're amazed at how fast it's spreading already.

From this experience I'm starting to wonder if shaking at 5-10% might be the way to go from now on, then maybe once more around 30-50% instead of just around 30%.

Anyway take this however you please.
I just figured I'd share.

Base things off of dozens of experiences not just a few. If you've done it this way less than say 50 times the evidence is nearly meaningless.

We shake at ~30% especially after spore inoculation so that you get full colonization after one shake in a couple to a few days. If you shake at 10% then it may take 5-6 days to get to 100% you'll naturally want to shake again before that then just set yourself back time wise plus your mycelium has an extra recovery it didn't need

I usually myself have shook around 30-50% but I've never seen it recover and spread so fast after.

By then it gets a lot harder to break up and I can only speak for myself but there's a lot of clumps left behind where as his jars broke up completely.

I found it interesting and like I said:
"Anyway take this however you please.

No need to get worked up

No one's worked up...
Clumping and hard to break up is the biggest indicator of bacterial spawn. You should be able to shake at 30% with just your hands and have no clumps. Unless your grain prep was shit clumps are pretty much a bad sign

It shouldn't be hard to shake up at 30%? Nor should it be hard at 100% o.o

Man I used to have to beat the shit out of the jars I'd noc with spores back in the day, never thought much of it, but now they break in half with a quick tap on the carpet and I can hand shake the rest of the way pretty easy, and if I can't, I know something's up.

But fuck.. I used to get my arms fuckin sore over a dozen jars.

nice write up on how you got jars to 50% faster. But wouldn't it be more interesting how to get to 100 first?
