I’ve cloned a fruit and this is what it looks like on agar.

Is the best way to go about this to grow out each side individually but also combined?

It could just be morphology difference and both sides are the same.

what tek are you following? even if you did spores to grain youd see WHITE mycelium not black mold.

Even if I do have to start over it wouldn’t bother me.  Have plenty of agar incubating.  Definitely won’t be inoculating grain direct with MS again though.  Tek’s I’m using are from Bod.  May not have them dialed in yet but working on it.

Those are definitely not pins. Just looks like some other type of grain that found it's way in your bag. I find all kinds of weird shit in my oats, bits of stalks, corn, mineral pellets.

How did you inoculate? It looks like you tried MS straight to grain, which would explain why there's no mycelium visible cause sometimes spores are stubborn and take awhile to germinate. If that's the case at this rate you're almost definitely gonna end up with a bacterial mess.

If you used any other method of inoculation you should be almost if not entirely fully colonized.

I made 10 jars and inoculated 6 MS to grain.  Saved 4 for agar transfers.  Those are actually starting to show mycelium.

@Inocuole you are probably right that I am over thinking it.  Something I’ve always done and patience isn’t really my strong suit either.  Really want to get one successful grow going so I know what kind of timeframe I’m looking at for me and build on it from there.  Looks like I’ve had my temp too low.  They’ve been in the mid 70’s.  Just added a heat source to get them at 85+.  Thanks!

Thanks @Stareatclouds.  I’ve started a journal for my grain jars and agar.  Just haven’t seen anything right or wrong to notate for my jars yet.  Guess now’s a good time to start.  Also need to do more research as well to have a better understanding of what to look for and when.  Work a FT job and have a business I run but this is something I enjoy and want to learn more about.

@Bod that’s good to hear.  I didn’t think there should be pins yet so I’m glad that the case.  Been using your Tek but I’m sure I made mistakes.  Just going to keep working on it.

I really fuckin hope that with the FDA giving these some leeway that we can do some tests and figure out exactly how safe it is to eat cubes grown on questionable substrates.

We could be worrying over nothing, they might be an excellent bio filter.  We could also really need to be aware of something that's been under our noses.

i really hope a lot of things like this are explored more thoroughly. Did you see the john hopkins reclassafication recommendation?

Some of the grain jars in my previous post are starting to spawn!  Increased the temp and did an A2G transfer with some of them.  Just praying for no mold.

I take back what I said earlier about disagreeing with their wetness. For some reason I thought he inoculated with LI and not an agar wedge. I think they can pull through, but yeah, no reason there should be any wetness in there.

Oh my! I didn't see that till ya said something stare! Those are definitely way too wet. You can hold on to hope brain, but I wouldn't be surprised if they stall out from an infection much less give you a flush if you spawn em without gettin some trich patches.

Did you do the paper towel test on your grain before loadin em up?

If you're getting jars like that, it's a great test to get you started in the right direction for properly hydrated grains. I stopped doing that long ago, I can tell just by mixin em around. I use a big window screen so my oats steam off in about 15-20 min.

All I've ever done is oats, I bet if I switched to rye I'd get it too dry lol. I'm a spacey mofo, always have been, so a grain that likes to hold water like oats is perfect for me. The fact that I've been growing nothing but truffles for the past year is a bonus too, those extra wet jars come in handy when you have a culture that starts stoning up after only 2-3 weeks.

The one time i did oats was with stones and those hulls are a bitch to be rid of.

Wheat and rye do like a bit of moisture at pc
