I have an electric sterilizer, so no wobble weight there, it's about 23 qts, but my venting is counted from the moment it starts properly blowing out steam, until 1 hour past that point. Then I close it up, when it hits 17 psi pressure I start a timer for 3 hours and dial back my control to where it will stay about level, adjusting it every now n then as needed.
So how long do all you other people with sterilizers vent?

I can't start a new thread apparantly and this seems to be an thread open to any colonization questions. My first grow and all 21 of my cakes are looking good. All tall 1/2 pint pf jars. Hawaiian pes and south American. A few jars have a few small pins starting to form and I'm just waiting on the bottom to finish up(which feels like an eternity)lol. Am I good to let them finish full colonization? They are at room temp, usually 70-74° and have been on 12/12 light cycle during whole process. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am on day 24 since inoculation.

The tall 1/2 pints are not recommended because the bottom often stalls or slows down pretty well because all the BRF settles and compacts there.
When I do 1/2 pint tall BRF jars now I just fill it a tad over half full, put a tyvek filter on top then open it in a SAB and noc it up. No more uncolonized bottoms here and there or waiting forever. Also no worrying about the dry verm layer getting disturbed and contaminating the project.
Being that it is pinning already, there may be contams in there and it's trying to fruit and drop some spores before the contaminate finishes it off.
Also as said earlier there looks to be gray mold by the lid were your pinky finger is.
As hard as it is to accept it would be wise to throw it out and start over if that is mold. You don't want the spores being spread around your area and you don't want to inhale em ether and be in a world of potential organ failure.
Mold aside, if it is pinning early you can pop it out, cut off the uncolonized part and hope for the best and at least a fruit for a spore print.
Edit-- I honestly doubt that is a shadow and clearly looks like grey mold from here. Throw up another pic with a light shined on it?

Is this a common problem in mushroom cultivation?

It has happened, there was a post from a guy a month or two ago warning about keeping contaminated tubs around. He is dieng from organ failure due to spore inhalation.
The more seasoned cultivators could answer that question but most people throw out contaminated grows immediately and stress to others to do the same. If they didn't it would probably be more common by default.
It just isn't worth the risk to contaminate your growing area or your own body. We are suppose to be growing specific mushrooms, not mold or what ever happens to pop up.

No it is not. If you had moldy bread would you put your face into it and huff it? Just like anything, there will always be someone out there that gets injured though, I wouldn't worry at all, if something looks amiss I shake the jar, if something is wrong it won't colonize correctly so I definitely dont sniff it, if a tub changes color, take it outside and dump it.
Years ago we had a guy huff some shit out of a bad jar and ended up in the hospital but I have a feeling people like that end up going to the hospital for other wacky shit too.

I use 5 um for all my projects (in vitro reishi, sawdust bags, grain) and I’ve yet to see a problem.

That's a dangerous way of thinking. Besides, evolutionary science has moved on from survival of the fittest. It's all about the genes and the organism as a whole.
Anyways, in an attempt to include more mushrooms in my life, I've been paring them with a giant bag of rice. This has been my diet for the past few days. It's been supplemented with reishi and ginseng tea.

I honestly don't remember, I go through quite a bit of posts in my spare time but as said earlier there are not some bright bulbs on the tree of life and they are multiplying quick these days.
I'll try scrounge it up tomorrow when I have more time.

Maybe he's dying from organ failure, but I'd be hard pressed to believe its from spores

So how long do all you other people with sterilizers vent?
I wait until there is a steady stream of steam coming out and then I vent for about 20 minutes. Thats with a 75X. The 75X vents through a capilary tube so not as much volume flows through it and more time has to be alloted.
With a 941 set up as a sterilizer I do 10 minutes.
