I read that but I think his meter wasn't very accurate. It says under 5000 ppm . I had a digital meter. I had to open my back door turn on a fan. Took a few hours got it down to 450. I ll look in the morning see what it s at. See if my cakes fruit better.

Did you know the CO2 info in Paul's book is just bullshit? No one's ever replicated his findings. Chances are he made those #s up. Anyone who does a study lists their materials and methods, Paul listed neither so we can't even try to recreate the experiment he did to "find those #s" and even if he didn't just bullshit those numbers you think the 1970-1980s co2 meter was as good as one 40 years newer?
People actually have corrected his temperatures listed in his books. Because that data was also wrong.
Or how do you measure fresh air exchanges. He didn't say how he measured them so no one can measure them the same way anyway. Completely asinine book. If you have a science background it's almost impossible to keep turning the pages.
Those books are coffee coasters.

When you guys start up your PC, do you vent for 10 minutes starting when steam comes out or once the locking mechanism pops up?

Beats me but the colonization and Fruiting temp tables are wrong. I've heard RR argue well the mycelium makes it's own heat tho, and those #s are the substrate temp without the heating by mycelium. That makes no fucking sense though. you can't measure the temperature of a substrate and subtract the heat created by the mycelium.

I always thought you start the 10 min after the locking mech pops up with a good plume of steam. Sometimes my lock mech pops earlier than other times, should I be gauging by 10 min of steam escape time?

Nah I guess I’ve been doing it wrong all this time my first PC didn’t come with instructions so I followed a tek that says
Quote:
Once steam comes out of the top set a timer for 10 minutes. NO LESS
Which I assumed meant as soon as you see steam. The lock has always popped up for me a minute before or after I put the weight on, which means I was barely venting if venting at all
So apparently I have just been partially sterilizing hundreds of pounds of grain over the past year and a half

I always thought you are supposed to wait until its really generating a lot of steam then slap the weight on. Doing so gets all the air out or am i incorrect?

I think his gear was garbage in 1978. My room was at 480 ppm. It must have taken a long time to get to 1800.

I don't think CO2 meters are even accurate today. I've done a lot software development in process control (at oil refineries) and I've had more than one engineer tell me that gas analyzers just aren't very accurate. But when you take those readings along with other more accurate sensor data like temp, pressure, etc it becomes useful (for doing predictive analysis or looking at the overall environment).
But the one reading by itself (say CO2) would be worthless. And I'm guessing here, but I think an industrial gas analyzer is going to be a lot better than some handheld device you can buy for your house.

Co2 alarms for breweries are hundreds of dollars. And they're accuracy is +or- 10% ofnthe measurement or sometimes it's listed in PPM and around 500-2000ppm is what they can be off. And that's 400-1000 dollar meters
20-30,000 ppm starts to fuck you up. That's 2-3% co2 in air.

I have a co2 controller meter for a grow room. It cost about $600 ten years ago. I never use co2 anymore . But I pulled out the meter from storage to test the air. It's accurate, take it out side it s high 300's.

Anyone ever added perlite to their bulk sub? I ask because I started growing herbs and perlite very important for root oxygen and growth... I was thinking about shrooms and herb growing. Wouldn't the added room for growth and air etc be good?
Anyone wanna try it?

There are a ton of posts of newbs using perlite by accident.
it has always been frowned upon from my research (excpet for SGFC or the like, never in subs).
I don't know if it would actually perform well with someone who knows what they are doing or not

Right noobs using it in massive amounts no bueno. But I'm curious to what a handful added to a shoebox tray would do. Someone try it. I'm gonna inoculate WBS tomorrow for the first time in many months. Got a good new culture from a friend (tribe rocks, if you get the chance, meet these folks, all have been cool as fuck!) and can't wait to put it to seed

I just takes up space something that holds onto more water could occupy. Perlite only gets wet on the surface. verm actually holds moisture and provides aeration.
But go for it

Yep. I probably let mine vent for 10-15 minutes after it starts spitting out air. I put the weight on when the pressure is around 5PSI or something and there's no more air coming out, only steam.
