I'd spray anything around it. I also chose my fruiting spot in between two railroad ties in the backyard. So they had about 6in of protection on 3 sides, and the ties being wood, held onto a little moisture I suppose.
You can kinda see them in that picture on the ground. That's where I picked them.

And cover with 1: yard dibree 2: peat straight out of the bag 3: ph adjusted peat/verm
Any of these three will work equally well.
I dump all of my spent subs into a 4'x4' planter box. The ones buried under others do not fruit nearly as well.
I put about 1/4 or 3/8s of soil on top of them then a small layer of lawn trimmings. Is that overkill?
Then i propped up some chicken wire about 6" above the patch with a bunch of top layer of compost as a sort of humidity dome that still let air through. Ill take a picture tomorrow

But couldn't improper sterilization let bacteria stick around and let mold in sooner?

The humidity dome may be overkill, just depends on your local conditions. I live in a humid area & have fruited cubes outdoors using a casing of most any available organic matter like leaves, pine needles, sand, potting soil, peat, etc..

What do you guys think of these? I think they’re all mold but not positive it’s still kind of early. My first time swabbing spores to agar this is the first transfer
Now this to the left that circled is almost definitley mold but it’s growing faster and obvious. What’s in the middle (my transfer) looks pretty identical but not growing like the mold circled so I’m not sure
 Here’s two other plates

And the original pasty plates that I tried to do a streak with but it just spread spores everywhere so I can’t tell what’s what now

I might just be transferring mold to more plates

I'm concerned with the caps drying out after they get above the casing. Humidity here averages around 20

My agar seems to be drying out really fast recently. My room does run 80+ in the summer sometimes
Does a few degree change dry it out faster? Or am I pouring too thin?

I’ve had a bag of leftover sub and grains in the fridge I want to PC. I don’t have tyvek sleeves on hand but I have a super long roll of tyvek that I could fold into the shape and length of a sleeve. Any reason it won’t work?

This week i learned that if you take agar straight outa the fridge and drop it into jars it's pretty unhappy.. took 4 days to wake up Finally growing a bit.

ya i don't like using refrigerated cultures on grains. I will make at least one transfer and let that grow out, cause ya that old one has been chilling for a while and it will take a few days just to recover.
