You're sure you're agar was clean? Sorry I never saw your post if you posted about it. How do you feel about your session that you put the wedges in there? Didnt touch any glass rims or anything?
If it keeps up try 2hrs pc time. I do that with rye and oats.

Could have been the agar there is no telling. I tiger dropped so it didn’t touch anything but I’m going to give it another try. Wbs has been good to me so far. Probably does need a 2 hour cycle since there is just so many small grains in a quart of millet.
Yeah the thread was just getting everyone’s different ways of how they prep their millet. Some people say classic wbs methods a lot of people have mix opinions on classic wbs methods for straight millet with getting the moisture content right. I’m going to prep it a few different ways and just find a way that I like. It’s cheap and easy to get around me but so are oats.

Millet is awesome for grain masters. By far the most inoculation points of any grain. I tried amaranth once, which is even smaller grains, but it turned to mush. Millet has a nice hard shell so you can boil the shit out of it. You can also do no-soak with it. One of my favorite grains. Milo is good too but it doesn’t have the hard husk.

Yeah I think I’m going to try foomans wbs tek for my millet next and see how that works.

Oh and I prep millet just like oats. Boil the shit out of em, strain, let sit until excess water drains off, load into jars, and sterilize at 20psi for 90 minutes. In a canner you’ll probably want to go 2 hours because they only get up to 15. In my 25x I do 90 minutes at 20.

Cool I’ll try bods oat tek for my millet and go for two hours not 90 minutes. I’m guessing that’s no soak just a boil right?

I'm gonna rep MILO as much as possible, for me it is the perfect average of all the grains I tried. Easy to rinse in a regular collander, usually cleaner,
That said hydrating it is tricky, it likes to burst. so I rinse, soak for 24 hours in warm water, rinse. I bite a grain to see if theres a solid dry core, but its mostly hydrated. Add a pinch of gypsym, dry for >30mins, and PC. Its easy to get it too wet/too dry, but if you use your noggin it should be fine.
Its a pity I cant get regular supply.

I like milo I just can’t find it around here. I’ve tried some pre sterilized milo bags though and they were good.

Try it and you might be surprised. It’s got a thick shell. You sure you’re not using hulled millet from the health food store instead of whole millet from the feed store?
I already posted what works for me, but to each their own.

How do you boil the shit out of millet? Dumping boiling water into millet can burst them.

Maybe the temp difference is what bursts them. Maybe he starts from room temp and boils both the water and millet together? Eh Uno?

By the time water gets close to a boil, millet is at capacity.
Boiling the shit out of millet blows my mind. Sure uno doesn't mean milo?

I used hamloaf WBS tek and brought seed and water to 200F and then dropped temp down to half and boiled 5min., drained and let sit for 30-40min, then loaded jars and let sit 1hr uncovered before putting in PC. Very little exploded tbh and they were perfect IMO.

Yes this is what I mean. Now I’m coming back from a long break from the site and haven’t done this in close to 2 years, but if memory serves me correctly, I put millet and cold water together in a pot, brought to a boil, turned off the heat, let cool for a while, and then sterilized. So I’ll admit my memory could be incorrect here, but I’m pretty sure I boiled it. I used lots of it. Went through a 50lb bag over the course of a year, but I could be mistaken. Maybe “boil the shit out of it” is wrong, but I do remember boiling it. I’m going to be doing it again pretty soon when these plates are ready to go to grain. Still, take what I said with a grain of salt because of how long it’s been since I did it. I don’t want to go around giving bad advice.

Hams tek says to “simmer” for 5 minutes. Rolling boil would kill millet in 1 second.

I’ll know soon enough. The part I’m hung up on is that WBS is made mostly of millet and milo. I don’t see anyone arguing against boiling WBS, but I’m a little rusty and out of the loop. I’ll say no more on the subject until I do it again and can back up my claims with recent experience. What I do remember is that I’ve never had millet explode on me during prep, and the only problems I’ve ever had with it have been from sterilizing it with too much water in the jar. Not trying to win an argument here, just sharing my experience.

Yes, simmer on medium. It is still boiling just not rolling boil. Either way it worked fine for myself and am happy to have found such an easy tek that worked the first time out.

I've been doing ham's tek also, but since my WBS is the cheap stuff full of corn and all kinds of stuff, I bring temp to around 160 instead of 200 and then reduce the heat to low instead of medium.
So far its been very good results

Thank you. Now at this point, after thinking about it for a while, I’m pretty sure I put the millet in cold water, turned on high heat, brought everything to a boil, and immediately turned off the heat. Saying “boil the shit out of em” was inaccurate and I apologize for that.
On Saturday when I put these plates on grain, this is the method I will use, and since it’s my first grow after a long break from the site, I’ll document it all in a grow log.
Now to the other poster, there’s nothing wrong with being skeptical, but there’s a fine line between being a skeptic and a know-it-all. Stay on the right side of that line, and maybe don’t go out of your way to try to shoot someone down that happens to have been doing this for a lot longer than you. Makes you come off as rude, and there isn’t much of a place for that here.
