I guess it could be beneficial if you prepped grain on the dry side, but that could be fixed with a slightly wetter sub

Yesturday pins appeared!!!!!!!! First time ever!!!!! Is it normal to feel this excited??
So day two, there is some orange/ red liquid that in the bottom of shoeboxes. Should this be drained out?
There are side pins , what can I do to help this along?
The one box seems to have some strange color to it, possible contam??
Thanks for any advise or input, I'm still trying to learn everything I can.

It's ok to be exited, especially with first gow.
To prevent side pins I think you must cover box sides with non-transparent tape.
I sugest live this water as it is.
Wait a bit and if it is contam just try to grow this particular box in some other place -- if shrooms grows clean it will be ok to eat.

Light does have something to do with it, but not as much as surface conditions.
I've run tubs with clear, white & black liners. The black are the best for reducing side pins.

Exactly. Also depends on variety. Some pin like crazy in response to light.

i rarely get side pins with CLEAR totes and no liners. how can black be 'best' when myself and others can prove otherwise?

what do you mean by discounting his experience?
people saying things like which liner color is best, completely discounts(usage) the experience of those who dont even bother with them and dont deal with side pins like its something to avoid. its an occurrence if that for me.
proof? ustf i aint no noob i post my shit.

Just peaked at a few shoeboxes that were spawned around 2/23-2/25 and getting some knotting on the AA+ and LOTS on the redboy. golden halo has the reachy spikes but is fully colonized and I am hoping will pin soon enough.
Looking forward to working with new varieties and doing giveaways! Should be about 2 weeks and I'll have some to go out.

You're probably doing a more consistent job of providing perfect surface conditions than I am. That's why I like the liners, because it directs the fruiting energy upwards. I didn't use them in the beginning & found sidepins to be largely strain dependent, regardless of surface conditions or substrate shrinkage. That said, I do notice a difference between black and white/clear liners, which is why I said that my observations showed black to be most effective.
We're both clearly getting results with our different methods, so

Fuck yeah fisher I got to start my Red boy to PDA last night, 3/6, can't wait to run it, I got the CRS running too right now to compare spore colors, I'm hoping someone pops up with more PF Red Spore, I'm trying to get my hands on all three, I have plenty CRS and soon Redboys, gotta get my red on & find the PF

In the case of imperfect surface conditions which would normally lead to sidepins in a non-lined tub, the liner clings to the substrate and prevents those conditions from happening. This is what I meant by directs fruiting upwards, by preventing sidepins.

ambient supplemented with 2 6500k without the ambient they do lean big time. just, the more i grow, the more i can predict when ill see side pins. its always the surface conditions.
maybe im at a phase in cult where .....

I find it easier to control in monotubs or minimonos. In shoeboxes, I do have to mist in order to keep that glistening surface. Because it's difficult to keep it perfect, the liners work for me. I also really, really hate sidepins so it's worth taking that extra step to avoid them.
