Why do people add coffee to grain prep? I've followed several tek's that call for it. And done some that don't. Both seem to work.

Added nutrients but generally not beneficial (well, beneficial to *other* competing organisms) or necessary, I think at some point people got it mixed up with people who use spent coffee grains and filters as free oyster sub...

You would be better off making sure the grain is pH 7, and let the mycelium access more nutrients from the grain via enzymes. That being said, I am not bias towards any methods, personally I would not "enrich" an already "rich" media.
Adding the acidic coffee, may add nutrients, but it also shorten the life span of α-Amylase. If I add enough coffee and end with pH 5, α-Amylase will no longer work.
Checkout my Cubensis [Data Log] for enzymes and pH.

This not entirely correct. Although not necessary for mycelial growth, or fruit body formation coffee has many beneficial compounds for fungi, but nitrogen isn't one of them. Forget about NPK when dealing with fungi. Mushrooms are not plants.

So they don't use nitrogen? Can you elaborate? I know how to grow musshrooms but not about their nutrient necesities

You mean when working with grain, and higher spawn ratios?

God damn it. I was wondering where that post went off to when I posted it and couldn't find it in cult pics of the day. I reposted it there too.
Anyways I've seen occasional post on just loading rye up with the water in the jars already instead of cooking it or letting it soak. Is there any practicality to it as far as getting decent grain and is there a golden ratio?

God damn you Bod. I fucking hate algebra and I refuse to dissect that equation. Just a guess. I have to weigh my water and rye and you are saying 1:1? X=Water?
That's a serious question BTW. I need to load my PC and I really do refuse to try and wrap my brain around that.

No he made it up, lol. X2-x-1=rye, would be like: 10 x 10, - 10, - 1 = 89.
Weight of the grain x 1.5, will make 60% + internal content. For cooking you might prefer x2 dry weight, 66%.

And you in the peanut gallery stop laughing and help me so I can get this done before it's time for quiet time in the house.
So you are saying add 1 1/2 times more water than grain to the jars by weight if I am just going to add dry grain and water into the jars and PC.
And your a dick Bod.
Or should I just forgo taking a shortcut and give it a little boil.

No tea. Only answers. I'm probably going to end up just doing shit and making a mess. Or just going about it the usual way.

@TheBlackCat:
Sorry I thought it was a bit funny, try x 1.5 first, or one jar with x 2, see which comes out better. You can weigh the entire jar before cooking, and measure the total water loss.
You want: desired water content + grain + jar, weigh the jars (empty).
