But you can get 3 lids loose to where they are just sitting on the plate, then swipe one, then bam go right to the next one... I'll do 3 plates per swab... There are plenty enough spores on there to do 3, and the cross contamination between each is negligible.
Doing that with the lids and sitting them upside down loosely ontop of the lids also works really efficiently.

that's how I do it so I can keep the plate stable while I swipe it with spores and it makes it easier to see what I'm doing with lifing the plate vs the lid.
I also do this when cutting wedges from plates.
I like holding the plate rather than the lid because when cutting transfers I can be much more precise and don't have to hold the lid and the container at the same time or have to set the lid down to make a transfer.

Anyone ever have Pan. cyan. pin on agar before? Search function returns a few results but nothing like what I'm seeing on my plates.
My wild Pan. cyan. culture is pinning like mad all around the edges of the plate... I just went through a bunch of old plates to decide what needs to be tossed and I noticed most of my old plates of this culture are pinning.
I have the same culture on grain, it's colonizing faster than my cubes...
Edit, just realized I tossed most of the old plates that were pinning but I still have one although it's not as impressive as the others. Here it is with a light shining through the plate to show the pins clearly:

Is there any issue with splitting mushrooms in half to dry? With the dehydrator I have, I normally split the big ones up so that they dry properly and that they fit in the trays, but I'm not sure if there is anything detrimental about that (besides aesthetics)

It just affects aesthetics. They dry faster and that is what you want.

Doesn't even affect aesthetics that much either if you only split one side, and leave the other side in tact

I make a hole just bigger than a chop stick thin end and then poke polyfil down with a chop stick. Cut off stray ends. bang tidy your done. Never used Tyvek.
However if you want a supper easy way Drill a hole any size and stick 2 layers of micropore tape over it.
Some people are even using the leave the lid unscrewed tek.

I've not read anything, just trying to use my head here...once I have agar myc cleaned up ready to inoculate, would I inoculate a smaller jar, for quicker colonization, then use that as the "master" say 12 quart jars?

you see this tub........ micropore tape

Took 1 minute to make and works fine. When it looks old......remove and stick another layer or 2 on

Is there more to domesticating wild mushrooms than just growing them over and over, and are there some mushrooms that can't be domesticated?

I'm pretty sure you can't domesticate amanita muscaria.

Could be tough domesticating some for sure. Mycorrhizal relationships need to be maintained, some being very tree specific, and time could be a factor with the time to fruiting for some measured in decades.

A pint will get you maybe 8 qts but will take longer due to using so little grain ... you can use one plate of clean agar to make 5 qts and again it takes awhile to colonize ... or make one master with the tic tac toe tiger drop in pastys sig and have a master in 2 weeks or less then use that to make 10 more qts which should be done in about a week then you can decide to use a few and spread out the rest
