Could something like Cream of rice be used to noc up since it's super easy for myc to digest? Wouldn't that result in faster colonization?

Hot-Water Soluble Rice Starch -- Google. The longer the grain can be cooked, and the less that becomes soluble, the better the grain (whole).

Prep would be different for sure, I’m a hair splitter myself, sometimes its fun. Did you know that one the more popular lemons, the  meyer lemon (in strictest botanical terms) isnt really a lemon? Its more closely related to a mandarin, and can be grown where there are freezing tempuratures.

That's fucking cool. I looked into hardy citrus, but we still get to low some times for them.

When I was in college they had a lemon cross in the GH. I think I remember the teacher saying she thought it was crossed with a grapefruit. They were some big ass lemons, good flavor for cooking but maybe no lemonade, lol.

Is it typical to have cvg start out level when mixed with colonized grain, then after several days of colonization the mycelium starts to push up from the substrate making it appear less smooth and level?  I made sure not to press down the mix.  After mixing and leveling can myecilum be strong enough to move things around?

Not a great pic through the plastic, but you may get an idea of some of the "craters" and slight ridges.

Looks good, the little divots and dimples in the surface seem to help pinning, like they like little pockets to pin from. I guess mycelium could moves things a bit, but so could the flexing of the plastic tub.

I appreciate the reassurance.  Day 8 of a 1 to 4 ratio colonized grain to bulk and getting restless.  I know I'm probably analyzing things too much.

Mad, I've had a few folks ask if we were "related" considering our handles are similar. And since discovering you over the last few months and reading your posts, I believe I'm in good company.  Cheers!

If you read what I wrote, I utterly agreed with you, but you said starch makes it bad, what you meant was it breaks down too easy.
As you said it breaks down into solubles even in cold water for long periods, it becomes soluble far too easily.

As you can imagine, the soluble starch will contaminate like an open to air liquid culture.
Any grain you can cook for a long time, without breakdown, is a better grain.

----

Side note, the insoluble starch can produce low carbon settings for a short period with spores.
Imagine insoluble starch as more like cellulose, and soluble starch more like sugar.

----

Personally I prefer rye or wbs due to their resistance-toughness.

If working on a culture that is bacterial would it be wise to take a transfer growing up the sides of a plate.

My thoughts are that a dish has still air so if anything bacteria  wise is in the dish it's going to struggle to go up the sides of the dish

Let alone there is no nutes on the walls for growth.

What do you think.

If the culture has ran into the walls of the plate take a transfer from anywhere and see if anything good grows, then grab a transfer from the leading edge.  If the culture has not ran into the walls of the plate take a transfer from a leading edge.

Pics?

Are there any good posts/guides that discuss substrate and spawn pH? I'm working with some different species and want to start monitoring and adjusting pH of my mediums.
