Cubensis will decay birch toothpicks, though you will need to add trace malt extract to your cooking water.
----
Here I germinated Cubensis on a toothpick peg, with added sucrose, the nutrients are in the paper. The media is WL-Tek (macro-micro nutrient enriched cellulose, no added carbon, pH 7.5).
The Cubensis dry spores germinated and grew out after 4 days.

----
Here I spent a tea bag in 250g CaCO3 water (pH 8.0), to remove the phenol's. I added trace sucrose, because Cubensis is "not" lignicolous.

It regenerated and grew out after only 8 hours.

----
Not a single grain was used.

Long term storage in slants has wood as well, but just a few toothpicks aren't your best option. The wood is awfully thin. I used tropical hardwoodin agar slants a few times but they needed a PC run and a night in the remaining water just to be properly hydrated. I've got some cotton candy sticks laying around for the next slant round, but haven't tried them out yet. Reishi LOVED the hardwood. Serbica as well. Didn't try cubes. Just a few wooden toothpicks alone probably won't supply enough nutes for longterm storage, that's part of why we use agar in slants. I did try like 30 test tubes with toothpicks for cubes, for other reasons, and they colonized, but the mycelium taken from the fresh growth side was awfully weak when plating it back out. Hope that helps you some way..

If you add enough malt extract, it's actually better than malt extract agar. Still, I have only "stored" lignicolous mycelium on toothpicks.
You can even try cooking the pegs in grain water.

It's only important if you live in a spot to where the availability to empty moldy jars outside can't be accomplished,

I'm not sure what your point is. I can get cubes to colonize a sub consisting of mostly wood as well. Lots of available water and just enough nutes to run the media. But the yield is never there in the end.
I once had a label mishap where I thought I was expanding a woodlover and ended up with cubes. Couldn't figure out why the mycelium was so rhizomorphic. Of course despite it being a great looking colony it put up only a few shitty fruits.
It's no secret cubes can colonize all kinds of shit. Many species can. But can they fruit well off of it is the question. I appreciate people thinking out of the box. But at the end what we really want is a yield. If that isn't there then the whole exercise is just masturbation.

i live in the city bro. a big one. all the more reason to never, ever let a jar go full on moldy. dont have the time for failure like that. i cant just dump tub after tub or jar after jar of moldy shit either.
and since time and space are issues, all PC runs most be live. as in no pcing moldy jars that i should never have. if i see mold? i have no choice but to dump that shit right away. gutter birds/flying rats take care of the rest.

If you can't dump it outside and you're really that worried about it I would just toss the whole jar, it's what I use to do when I did pf tek out of laziness and I was paranoid about dumping it outside. Now I don't care and have 3 cube subs and a triched out pile of straw from an oyster bucket sitting under a tree in my back yard.
Jars are cheap where I live, but you have to fight off a hoard of old ladies if you want the wide mouths

@Pastywhyte:
I think you got the wrong end of the stick (pun intended), I was answering pacmanbreed's storage question. He asked if pegs can be used for storage, I was providing a yes with proof, because it works.
If the peg contains the same amount of malt extract as a wedge, why not? The peg is solid, easy to store in a vial, and easy to use.
All you need is sterilized metal tweezers.

Except they can't be properly used for storage of cultures. That's why there is both agar and wood in a slant. AFAIK, the wood will protect the mycelium better because it's a 3D matrix instead of a 2D one, but it lacks the nutes; soaking it in trace sugars won't suddenly make it a nutrient rich substrate that gives nutrients off slowly like agar does, it's still a nutrient poor substrate that runs out quickly and is also too thin with toothpicks, to properly protect the mycelium.

Just made a couple transfers from this PE plate. Does the transfer on the bottom look like the clear aggressive myc that people talk about?

If that bottom one you took from was 5 o'clock then I would've avoided anywhere from 3 to about 7 or so personally. Anywhere else would be my choice and I generally take 3. Top one was a good spot
