I'll be honest, I am not here to "replace" anything, all of what I do is either "optional", "alternative" or "informative", not an issue if you don't want to use it.

----

Since you mentioned about variation in the media, in terms of spawn, wild bird seed has variation, usually about 5-6 types of seed.
The seeds are also coated in complex cellulose, more than naked grain (no shells), ideal for transfer to cellulose.

----

Funny fact, coco coir is actually a lignicolous material, high in cellulose, some phenol's and trace other.
No real sugar or starch, the phenol's are more like birch, they don't seem to inhibit mycelium.

DAMN now I want some fucking birdseed to try for sure.

So does birdseed work better for wood lovers than say oats?

"Should" also be more resistant to contamination.

I read your post, I've done selective clones to end media as well, no agar, grain or sugar.
Clones are essentially end media isolates, in fruit format, also fully expandable.

Quick data compilation for Cubensis (informative purposes):

----

Materials:

Glycogen: [C6]--[H10]--[O5], (contains glucose).

Cellulose: [C6]--[H10]--[O5] x z, (same as glycogen, contains glucose).
Starch: [C6]--[H10]--[O5] x z, (same as glycogen, contains glucose).
Sugar: [Cz]--[H2]z--[Oz], (sugar varies, ideally use glucose).

Protein: [Cz]--[Hz]--[Nz]--[Oz] x z, (contains both carbon and nitrogen).

Enzymes, and pH:

Cellulase (cellulose): 4.5-8.5.
Laccase (phenol's): 5.5-6.0.
Amylase (starch): 3.0-7.0.

Protease (protein): 2.5-11.

----

pH, can vary slightly:

"In addition most fungi grow best in an acid pH, but dung fungi grow best when the pH is around 7, which is the average pH of dung." -- Source.

Coir, pH, 5.5 to 6.8:

Carbon: Cellulose, phenol's, trace proteins and other.

Contains acidic plant phenol's and other acids (like wood does), such as lignin and tannin.
To do: Check the end pH of your coir, and make sure it's acid free (add CaCO3).

Grain, pH, 5.4 to 6.8:

Carbon: Starch, sugar, cellulose, proteins and other.

The higher amylase enzyme works best at pH 6.7 to 7.0, this is ideal.
To do: Make sure the end result is pH 7.0 to 7.2.

----

Cubensis does not target plant phenol's, such as lignin or tannin, no laccase enzymes.
However due to oxidization effects of standard decay, the phenol's break down.

Adding trace sugar or starch to cellulose, will supply starter units.
It's better to have the starch-sugar locked up into spawn.

----

Lignicolous mycelium armed with laccase, will target and decay the phenol's.
Therefore no added sugar or starch is required, it can self supply.

----

Coir left out for long periods can get mold (lignicolous).

----

Cubensis also utilizes ureic and ammoniacal nitrogen.

So hard water sucks for misting.

Was noobing over my tub yesterday  that appeared to have water dropets covering the surface. Turns out it wasnt water and it was the minerals left over from the water evaporating. Gunna start boiling my misting water to make it "soft"

That doesn't make sense, hard water is water with lime in it, CaCO3, which turns into a white solid when it dries.
I mist with pH 8.4 water and CaCO3, no issues whatsoever, however I pasteurize my water first.

Hey guys, the back to my parafilm roll has started to peel off on its own. Should I just use saran wrap to be safe?

The whole grain will get mushy if I'm not mistaken.

Unless youre implying mixing it with verm for a pf style. In which case I have no personal experience.

Indeed, hence the mixture with vermiculite, as if BRF-Tek. Although 1.89 is not much waste.

Alot of people using brf tek are shooting spores into the jars, so while it might work, I'd note that oats are not as contam resistant as brf and your success rate would drop.

Do you have any idea why it's more likely to contaminate, or just that is does from experience?

Thanks.

That white solid makes it look like water droplets since they were water droplets before evaporation. I had to get in close to see it was just white water droplet looking residue.
