I found that mine ran a lower temp than what the dial said, probably 25-30F less. Play around with it with just water for a little to find that sweet spot.
Fuck I might actually try spawning some cubes to some straw soon. I put some in QT sized cakes and it worked out NICE.

Hell if I get things right...I'll try to play along too..I've been intimidated by pasteurization for some time now....about to say fuck it and give it a go as well...what did you put your straw in while pasteurizing? I read the pillowcase method is a pita

When putting an agar wedge in a jar of grain how many times do you guys shake and at what point in colonization? Do i just drop the wdege and let it colonize to 60-70% and then shake? Sorry if its a dumb question

i just inoculate and let them sit until 30%. then shake. that way if i see contams on the top of the grains i know it was my technique.

I drop my wedge in and leave it for a few days (up to 5) until the myc has jumped off and colonized about 25% of the grains...then I shake for about 30 seconds

Is that the only time you shake?

I drop my wedge and shake enough to burry it under grains. If I don't need the jars of spawn, I skip shaking to slow down colonization and buy me some time.

you can really shake whenever. id just wait until im certain no fuckin fuzzy green shit breaks out on my grains surface. otherwise a possible contam(from bad inoculation) gets all mixed up in the jar, maybe remaining buried.
you can kinda see how it works if you roll a colonized grain over agar. myc will germinate all over the place. now imagine thats not myc but some nasty ass contam that you just mixed all up in your bulk sub.
contams will pop up all over your substrate. leading many to blame the substrate. its those dirty ass grains you just rolled all over the place.

My strategy has been putting spores to agar, getting a clean transfer and then letting it pin, clone the pin and use it for grows. Iβm about to g2g and fruit some cultures of P. cubensis var βmarsβ in the next few days and Iβm gonna put some redboy to agar in about 15 min
