if your ball lids are warping you must be tightening them too much while pc.
what brand pc do you use? It's hard to keep them lose enough for a presto to not warp them. The fast cooling sucks them to the jars

are you sure it's ball brand?
if so it is possible you are over tightening them.
I was afraid of leaving them too loose at first and lost a few because they were too tight.
Like I said I have some with sfd's that have been through hundreds of cycles and still good no percievable warping.
The unmodded ones actually seem to be holding up best as far as easily spinning the threads but that may just be in my head.
The unmodded lids have been through over 30 cycles and I have over a hundred of those constantly in play and not a single one warped.
When I screw the lid on before pc, I screw it until it just barely starts to touch where get hard to turn. that's about the best i can describe it. Maybe I'll have to make a video of it.
I can literally just flick my finger and it freely spins into place. when brand new the threads don't spin as freely as after a pc cycle or two.
This is also very nice for making transfers as the lid is easlily spun off, opened, closed and spun back on with one hand and very fast. I am much smoother with these than with any other lid on any other container.

so when we're poking for the biop lc, we should not go for the leading edge but instead a little bit in from it?
I had a couple bopsies to lc that never took I think because I took the poke from the very leading edge pretty much where the invisible myc is.
All other lcs I did in this method that were poked from the inner parts of the myc all recovered and grew ridiculously fast.
btw nice looking plate !

Thanks!
In josexs thread i think he mentioned taking a poke from a younger less grown out culture for that reason i think.
I honestly never thought about it. I just stuck it in

You can poke the leading edge, but the white part. I don't think there's myc colonizing the inside of the agar right below where those thin, nearly invisible strands of myc that form the very leading edge are. Those are like 'scouts', searching for food and inspecting the area before the whole lot comes and conquers.
Mush, I was talking about culturing by just exclusively using the poke, I think that's a lot of stress for a culture. Like I wouldn't recommend using the poke more than two times on the same culture.

I'm curious to see Cyan on T-Gel, if you have time and a tiny sample. I intend to hatch Serbica on a sugar peg + T-Gel very soon.

Could this be a reason why substrates contaminate?
When we dunk a substrate after the first flush we know when we let the water run off that nutrients seep out as well so the water has nutrients in it. Now when we place the substrate back into the tub then water that leaks outside of the substrate can not be colonized by mycelium and will just sit there and whatever contaminant spore lands in there can of course germinate and start to colonize. Both bacteria and mold will flourish in stale water with nutrients.
And what about the water that gets expelled to the top of the substrate and? And the water that gets trapped inside the substrate? All of which the mycelium can not colonize 100%. Is this eventually how most substrates contaminate from within?
I know that bacterial spawn or spawn infected by some disease become weakened and eventually lets in all sorts of attackers, but well documented are the contaminations? To what precision are they diagnosed?
Iยดm just looking to ball some idea back and forth to dig into other peoples brainsto see if I can come to an insight of some sort.

Hey I have a ? when I try to PC larger jars that can't fit sitting upright in my PC I put them on the side and the grains get over cooked or whatever.
Can anyone please tell me a way that I can get around this or do I just have to stick with jars that fit upright? Sorry if my ? Seems stupid

Water is probably getting in because it boils up and into your jar. Use jars that fit upright. Laying down jars is good if you lay em on top of other jars.

Is your pc small? The presto 23 quart is nice. 7 quarts upright and 2 side ways on top with the handy dandy pressure dial guage.
