Rust is an issue imo because it will wear through the metal eventually. especially if you have a hole for ge, right where the metal is cut it will rust badly over time.

I use the walmart and ball ones. The walmart actually feel heavier like they would hold up better but there always the ones that dont spin very well after a few cycles.

what brand pc do you use? It's hard to keep them lose enough for a presto to not warp them. The fast cooling sucks them to the jars

well. i dont think it matters anyway. im just guessing but even with boiling the brf with water, and then filtering.. no way in hell is the end product broth 4% per 400.
whereas when i make 6g brf to 400, i dont filter and i KNOW for a fact that my agar is the % i need it to be. i bet anyone, especially using flour is not even using the nutritional numbers they think they are if straining.
how much of the 16g of brf is going into that water at the end of the process?

If you strain it your losing a lot. Lots of stuff is in suspension rather than dissolved.

how many of you strain your broths? i dont. its a pain and pointless from my stand point.
even when making shit clear as glass.

(rather clear for unfiltered brf)

 all unfiltered.

In malt extract theres no starches or trace amount. All the starch in the grain was converted to sugars. Mostly maltose. Also why its super easy to get crystal clear MEA
The brown rice flour is mostly starches that will stay suspended but not dissolve. So straining removes them

Seeing plates that clear makes me miss the BD Bacto agar I was using from work, that shit looked like glass. I'm using NOW agar now, same malt extract, and it has sediment. I do, however, enjoy the fact it solidifies at slightly lower temp.

no wonder i can do it so easily. i thought i was awesome. its the malt all along
it would be nice to found out what the true nutritional content of post filtered brf broth. all i can do is compare my own results and think that last time, my 4% unfiltered brf performed like 20g lme per 500 i made unfiltered.
almost the same identical shitty growth. or at least it SEEMED that way.

Beats me but total dissolved solids (tds) on oat grain soak water was under 2% so any raw grain mixture that is strained til clear or clear-ish i would reasonably expect to be under 2%

im trying to compare it to something with a lame analogy. helps me understand.
like buying a tank of gas, throwing away 3/4 putting it in the gas tank. then expecting the tank to be full
...leaving me wondering why my performance suffered.

Well we know mycelium does fine on anything from 0.5% maybe less brf all the way to brf paste.
Use what you need to make agar work for you as a diagnostic tool, culture expansion tool, and inoculant.
Even at 0.5% (unfiltered unstrained) it supports a pinset and growth of mushrooms to full maturity on dishes.
I don't always use brf agar but in a pinch when I do I want it to pour easy. Not foam and be relatively clear.
