I love exacto blades. I've had a 50 pack of blades that might have been 10$ and its lasted 10 plus years. Available locally and works great!

I grew a little bit of green on a plate, only noticed when a transfer to grain went green before myc could jump off - pulled the plate out of the fridge and there was like 3 colonies of green, i'm fairly sure its the fridge. Trash tek on the plate and jar, fridge has been sanitised and all plates go inside a ziplock now.
Living in a new place, need to cut that mold shit out early.

I like that a sponsor sells surgical scalpels, and I wanted to be fancy. It was awkward, the blade didn't fit right, and it felt weird to hold. I'm not going to bother anymore.

What? No way! Are you talking about the plastic handle ones or the metal handle? I recently switched to using the metal handle scalpels and they are far superior to the X-Acto knife that i used to use. The handle is longer, and its also much easier to clean than a X-acto handle. There isn't any nooks and crannies for contams to hide inside, unlike the X-acto. Also, pre-sterilized blades are nice. The method of blade attachment on the scalpels is also much more secure than the X-acto. The scalpel blade securely snaps into place whereas the X-acto blade is simply held in place by a sort of clamping force from the handle. Idk how you would lose the blade once it has been attached properly.
It looks like this

I finally switched from X-acto to actual scalpels and fucking LOVE them. They're so damn sharp. I love cutting trash liners with them, shaving off sub from fruits, slicing X's in bags for Lion's Mane. They're the shit! Also much easier to do agar work with and actually makes slants possible.

I personally love xacto blades. But people do try to use the blades too long. You need a pack of 50-100 and 3-4 handles all with blades. Ill switch to a new handle because eventually they get hot from flaming. Also the blades get shitty. They don't last long at all after we remove all the hardening when we sterilize them with fire

When is the best time to take your spore print? I let the veil tear from a cap and tried printing and didnt get much, I let another mushroom go well past it's prime and it shit spores out everywhere. What do you guys look for, let it flatten out and give it a day before printing??

How long do you print for? I print after the veil is completely broken, but before they're flat so I don't have a spore covered sub. I take 2 prints from each fruit, 1 for 4-6 hours to reduce bacteria and the second sits for 20-24 hours for good clean prints for syringes (if I ever make one) and trades. I have yet to have a print not be nice and dark, only on one occasion have I had a cap not lay a full print.

I sat a cap on tin foil for over 24 hours and it barely printed, maybe it was just the genetics lol. I just had a pasty plate pin and drop spores and watched it and realized that after it flattened out it REALLY dropped its spores so I let my caps get to that point in my shoebox this time before printing. Hopefully it was just a genetic thing and I get some nice prints this time, its been a while since I've done all of this so I'm rusty.

Could be genetics, I'm sure it's not uncommon to have sterile and non spore producing fruits in ms grows considering the vast genetic diversity. It's probably more luck than anything that us cultivators often pick fruits that sporulate well.

I use similar ones, so do a lot of other people on here. I found them in art & craft shops as opposed to DIY.
Those squared off blades are really good for taking agar wedges ime.
