madhatter2 said: Lots of first here! First time cultivating. Started with agar and first transfer of 8 day growth of MS syringe on MAE. I've looked over many pictures of mycelium, but it's not until you try growing your own that even the simplest and minute detail gets questioned. Any thoughts on the look of this mycelium growth? Specifically the center of growth, is usually dark possibly green in color? I used the outer edge of this growth and transferred to MAE. And tips on making cuts for the next transfer? Thank you all!

That's penicilium I think. Definitely a mold not mushroom mycelium. Ditch all those plates man sorry
my first couple of germination plates got contaminated with penicillium. It's a little discouraging, but don't give up, you'll get it soon enough and if anything it will teach you how to distinguish mold from myc (maybe even ID it)! Mycelium does not grow uniformally unless it is an isolate, which takes many many transfers, and mold will develop that dark center that you noticed. That is the sporophore, which if left long enough will sporulate. I don't recommend waiting to watch it do that, even if it is pretty cool.

I got chicken poo and worm castings I can pasteurize and use. So if I mix that with the pellets and verm I should be fine then for growing cubes?

Madhatter2, here. Ha!
Wow! never considered that, natedawgnow and 00burnout. Did a search for penicillium and the green center. Looks like you're right. I was hoping it was a reaction from the green dye I used. Since, this was the LAST pasty mini round I opened in the SAB, I should be ok with the other transfers I did in there right? I wouldn't need to throw the other plates away? And thanks for the encouragement 00Burnout.

Maybe I'm not even sure if there is pink there lol my wife says there is no pink only white. I've always assumed anything pinkish was lipstick mold especially on Petri's if it starts pink it usually turns to red. I'll have to look up pink yeast and see what that looks like. I need to better my contamination IDing skills I've seen more than my fair share of contams over the years I should be a pro by now but im not lol.

If your other transfers were made from the same mycelium that produced what you have in the pics above, then ya they are most likely mold also.

It's possible if he removed all the lignin and inhibitory materials, and made acid free cellulose. I doubt this has been properly tried, but adding lime to ph 7-8 should do the trick.
Cubensis has no issue with cellulose, but it does with inhibitory materials.

I made another sugar syringe, 4g to 25g boiled water, this is ~14% sucrose, which is a disaccharide of glucose-fructose, it has the formula: [ C12 | H22 | O11 ]. Usually 14% would be too much "alone", however I am using it to sugar drop onto enriched cellulose, where it will be spent correctly.
I've added about 12 drops, to and around my cubensis spore peg, at it's current stage, contamination is unlikely.

Who wants to talk about why cordyceps will make a bug attach to a plant and fruit from it. Or why morels like wood ash + hydration, which triggers them to fruit?

I would, but I'm afraid I'm not knowledgable enough on the subject to bring much of anything to the table other than "it just does" lol.

2nd one.
It's usually black morels are found near Forest burned areas.
I've found tons of yellow morels on the west facing hillside in a forest. Hardwood and pines nearby.
I would assume the dying roots of burned trees and high pH of soil after exposure to the elements for a year. Generally when hardwood ash get soaked it creates lye raising pH. But idk

Here is brown card, pretty horrible growth, later I dumped pH modified pine pellets (7-7.5, CaCO3). I also enriched the pine pellets with a nitrogen source, which wood lacks very much.
