Those pics were taken at x1000 magnification. Ive also prepared a stained slide with agar mycelium, but I was having trouble differentiating all the different components.

Vital work is incredibly fascinating, just watching single-celled organisms make vast pilgrimages across the slide...for no reason at all. It makes you consider your own purpose in this world.

Highly recommend getting a microscope if you're interested. I bought the Omax 40x-2000x for $194 and vital stain kit for $27.

If it is all cake mix then simply crumble into the shoebox. Level it off. Throw a casing on it and pop the lid on until it recolonizes in a few days.

you could cut the tops off the bags and just fruit it as a block inside a mini mono.. like this.

or like bosleys bags. same fruiting approach kinda thing. or dump in a shoebox?? seems like you could do a lot.

So a while back I put again to 3 different types of grain so seee which colonized fastest....totally forgot to post results.
The wheat by far colonized fastest. It took the oats and wbs at least a week to catch up to the wheat. Next fastest was wbs. And lastly oats took the longest to colonize.
Once I finish up my bag of oats I will probably only be using wheat from now on
**edit
The wbs and oats are about the same actually

I put the agar to grain on 10/4
Here is a pic. On second look, the oats might be faster then wbs, but not by much

Its only three jars. Thats not a test.

Also the culture isnt an isolate. And it should be tested with multiple cultures.

You probably just prepared the wheat best and or the culture liked wheat more

All three don't look healthy so i would say its moot.

Very true. Definitely would not pass the basic standards for a scholarly review. It was loosely put together, by a total noob, so any of the results posted should be taken with a grain of salt.
But I posted about doing it on 10-4 so I figured I'd share my results.

The oats and wbs look wet against the glass. The jar on right looks at about proper moisture.

Thanks guys and gals.  :mushdance:

Usually takes about a day to recover.  If you can see growth after 1 day then it's normally just the grains close to the surface regaining their vigor.  If you have something faster than that then it could be noteworthy, such as genes for fast recovery you could select for.  Anything within about a centimeter of a grain appearing colonized after 1 day is totally normal though.  Spawn ratio is a pretty big factor too.
