@TBC, Nitrogen isn't a driving nutrient in mycelium growth like it is with plants. Do you put any nitrogen containing elements in your agar media? I don't know about you but my plates pin just fine without the addition of coffee. Peptone is a standard agar recipe ingredient for some species but it is definitely optional and not required. How do you know that your nitrogen/coffee is making a significant difference? do you have a way of testing this hypothesis to bods standards? My point is simply that any statement such as the one you made must stand up to the scrutiny by which ferather's statement was judged
Gypsum costs me 5-8 bucks for a 40lb bag. I bought a bag a few years ago, use it mainly for grain prep and maybe a handful in my sub if I remember, and I literally haven't bought a new bag since. I'm almost out, but literally 8 dollars is nothing for 2+ years worth of a product

If bod wasn't argumentative some people would probably get away with some false stuff. What I put IS "subject to debate", and therefor a debate arose, not an issue.

I use gypsum all the time, so I can't really say much on grows w/o it.
That said, I use it in prep to flood the water with ions. Not much will leech out from simmering the grains and should be replaced with calcium and sulfur. I use it in bags to aerate the bottom and soak up any extra water if they sweat a lot after cooling.

I use gypsum because I also fret about PH balance and whatnot. WBS grainwater smells sweet/sour, so I have this conception in my head of the mycelium suffering because of acidity. What is cubensis mycelium's prefered PH range anyway?
I got a bag of it 6 months ago and it lasted that long. It also helps with WBS clumping, and helps with shaking. At this point though I dont care if I forget to add it to grains or agar or whatever.

wbs shouldnt clump.. work on your grain prep. wbs should fall apart easily. even when colonized. work on that grain prep before you think gypsum is solving those problems mang.
i love my stinky birdseed water. my gypsum always settled in the bottom into a gummy mess anyway.

I tried calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with a grain prep, made a mess, I only use it to alter pH now. The carbonate turns soluble and germinates yeast, which made everything worse.
I have never tried CaSO4 (gypsum), as I am using other sources.
Also gypsum is closer to pH 6.5-7, it doesn't neutralize.

Some people like to call this a place of learning or whatever. True learning can't happen without debate or differing opinion. I think that bod is totally rude Before he was a mod he was a total prick to people. You took an extended break from this place but I remember the bod of a few years ago. Doesn't mean I myself am particularly offended.
I actually drew a lot of inspiration from bod back when I did my first wild reishi clone and grow. Doesn't mean I'm not allowed to disagree with him and point out bullshit where I see it I like all you fuckers even if I disagree with you It's an internet forum, nothing that happens here carries over into real life except the mush!
On topic- I'm about to pull 18-20 shiitake blocks out of my fridge and pop em in my greenhouse Pretty stoked hopefully I can actually sell them this time

@natedawgnow, he still made a fair point about holding onto nutrients whilst cooking grains. I only really put that there as a pressure cook bonus (I dont care anyway, lol).
----
@Germs, WBS has compositional variation, and more cellulose. I like WBS for those reasons, plus WBS comes out firm.

I keep getting rather shitty, almost mold like growth whenever i germinate dry spores. usually just drop them directly on soft agar, or i squirt some sterile water onto the media after depositing spores.
but its never as good as 'hydrated' spores i guess. is this related??

I know im kind of rude. Its good intention rude most of the time. Like the last job I left. I had a meeting with the owner amd head brewer and I told the owner the head brewer was a lazy fuck sinking the ship, while he was in the same room. Mean? Maybe but I'm not the one hiding no where to be found all day in bathrooms and coolers.
I worked with this British lady once. She would scold you to your face if you did something wrong. Best co worker ever. People hated her. I loved it. She made people cry lol.

Who needs cable when ya got the mush cult forums? Lol
I work with a couple people like that, they're my favorite co workers. They always get their shit done and if someone is being a lazy fuck it's pure joy watching them get torn a new asshole. I never have any problems with them, but I get my shit done.

When cloning where is the best area to take a cut from this is my first attempt at cloning
That's funny bod I worked with an old German lady at Frisch's when I was younger an she was mean as a rat tile snake but I never had an issue with her cause I just did what I was told. She would literally smack people on the hand with her hot spatula most of them would end up either running out crying or just never came back.
