so you're suggesting I make 16 plates for one drop of MS or what? from what Ive seen thats overkill lol. or just 8 plates for one, or just starting with one strain and storing the rest. Ill consider setting up the rest of my plates i think 2 more packs of 8 I could do.

I would make all that you can, then only inoculate 3 and use the rest for transfers

I need to ask my local feed store if they have wheat or rye. I want to try these for comparison. You guys find them preferable to oats? Do they provide better nutrition, or is it something to do with grain prep?

16 would be a good number for each original ss plate id guess 8 give or take to clean it up and the others to take sectors from (label) N grow out to see which 1 kicks ass, but then your gonna need more to expand to drop in your jars.
When in doubt make as many asap, if there pastys and u make mistakes u can always reuse em.

Whole oats are really high in nutrition due to the addition of the hull. Rye is king. Holds the most water, and is the most nutritious.

I work for crop and soil sciences, so I get wheat, barley and whatever else I want to take home. I just have to spill some first so it becomes cross contaminated and unusable for research. I wish I could just take home the leftovers after we get the data but we keep that shit for years. there's literally samples laying around that are older than I am

I have a 10kg bag of rye from a mill, but never use due to having the same amt of hull-on oats.
Really prefer having a hull for many reasons. Just like grass seed. Works great for g2g xfers, shaking and non-nutritious barrier.

this is the best looking growth i got off of 5 transfers with LGt. most of it looked tomentose and greyish. i believe it was accustomed to different nutrients. maybe liked others mixes better than pda.

did you put that to grain? I've been getting that thin looking myc and I thought it was because of bacteria riding along. is it just because I've been exclusively using PDA? ever since I read Grainbrain's journal I keep thinking I have an issue with my well water. but it could be an excuse for bad technique
I meant to ask, but my post never went through. in this pic, around 1-3 it shows a very thin leading edge. is this due to type of media or hidden bacteria?

what causes it to be so thin? every time I see that I assume bacteria is hitching a ride. is that normal? is it just that the agar gives enough contrast to see it? I've never seen it on grain or cakes
