You don't need grains for bulk at all.
I've been working PF jars on the cheese grater for a while with okej results but it's time to move on to grains for me.. BRF is even more expensive than WBS hehe

My point is he can still do bulk without whole grains. And i fail to see how 1 pint of brf is as expensive as 6 quarts of grains in a typical monotub.

I paid 30 bucks for 56 lbs of rye I think out of convenience. And their rye is uber clean or they will give me my money back. It's an agreement I have with them. I told them I have to grow oyster mushrooms with this and if it's full of bugs and weird shit I can't use it. The guy was like nahh this stuff is great. You can bring it back if you don't like it. The same with the wood pellets. He said if you don't like em bring em back. I was like word. I love a place that accommodates a picky customer. Apparently I'm not the only person in my town growing "oyster mushrooms" because he said "we have other people coming in and they love it for mushrooms". But I guess I really am growing oyster mushrooms too so yeah. He totally tried to sell me a ton of wood pellets. I was like I wish I could fit that in my basement. I'd totally take you up on it.

Also an actual question on the subject of recycling substrates. Am I using my spent cube sub for oysters? Or am I using my spent oyster sub for cubes?

I have to say, I much prefer oats to WBS. I don't know what the benefit of other grains are, and in your case, I'm sure you're switching because of price. I find oats to be quite forgiving in grain prep, and they usually absorb the excess moisture if I use a lot of liquid inoculant.
I think having a homogeneous grain makes things simpler. From what I understand Sorghum is a good grain to use, if one intends to make extracts from the mycelium, because the mycelium can consume almost every bit of the grain (upwards of 90%, I believe). For some species, there are a lot more of the medicinal components in the mycelium than in the fruitbody.

I've made the switch from oats to winter wheat and I'll likely feed the remaining oats I have to the chickens. Paying .12/lb for wheat in bulk, so $24 gets me a 200lb barrel and doubles as feed.
I'd like to try rye at some point, but for now I'm getting better results with wheat than I did with oats.

I get 50lbs of rye for 19.50 at a store 5 mins away.
Ask your local feed stores to order rye for you.

Either one will get you started. I'd even go so far as say use the SS for your first try, due to the fact you're already familiar with its use. Your success will come after a few transfers and clean growth.

got 16 plates ready to PC, then Ill use a droplet of each MS syringe onto a single plate and I can make 3 transfers each strain. unless I make up another batch. or should I pick two MS strains and do two of each just so I dont throw all my eggs in one basket.

more genetics does not mean more baskets. more plates does. stick with one until you can assure you will stay organized
