I try to keep it 70 and above as best I can. It's getting cooler here and I can't turn my regular heater on yet but I do got a space heater.

I really would like to know how much GE I should be giving a colonizing tub so it doesn't stall. I have two tubs I really worked hard on and I want to do it right this time.

You dont need to give the tub much ge at all no tubs are airtight thats why most people tape up tubs to colonize then fruit ... you only need ge when fruiting because it will cause aborts like so this was a tub with a small patch of green and the room it was in had very little airflow so co2 was high

They should have plenty of air(think spawn colonizing) if they stall i think it be from bacteria or a weak culture or it just not liking the sub.
Try doubling the amount of spawn u use and minimizing sub ingredients to the minimum. (And making sure moisture is correct)

I like liners when cutting them too. I can pull the whole sub out and set it on the lid. Less side pins. I don't know why the hell you wouldn't use one..

Mateah said: Hey guys! I'm wondering about Agar recipes. I want the WBS agar to give me stronger mycelium so I can easier spot sectoring. This is a comparison between DFA and WBS agar.
The DFA is at 2% strength, 6g dog food boiled for 5 minutes in 3 dl water and filtered. The WBS agar is 30g WBS boiled for 15 min in 3dl water and filtered.

This is 1st Transfer from MS plate as you can see WBS is growing a little faster but DFA allows to see clearly where the sectors are concentrated (hard to see in this photo but you get the point)
So my question is, does thin mycelium indicate more or less nutrition than the fluffy one? I understand that it's hard to compare DFA and WBS agar nutrition wise but what is the general rule for this?
I really like the WBS agar because of how fast the mycelium is growing on it but I cant really tell what's happening on that plate in regard of sectoring.
Also I did an experiment, I pinned a wedge on the tip of the scalpel and instead of dropping it on the plate I only tapped the dish with the wedge in hope of getting more limited amount of strains instead of dropping hundred of strains on the plate (my goal is to get to an isolate quick)
So this is how that turned out

Most of the rings look really round and I understand that there is chance of isolates or at least limited amount of strains. But as you see I have no chance of seeing the actual sectors.
Should I boil 60g WBS in 3 dl water next time, or should I maybe boil 30g for 30 min instead of 15 min? I noticed that 15 minute boil did not release a very dark color in the water. Any help is appreciated!
PS: Don't mind the satellites on the WBS plates I know about them also I live in Norway so this is 3.5 hours beyond Midnight Mycology for me...
Folks tell me that more nutritious agar will produce this thin weak mycelium, but if this has to do with nutrition density then why is the myc even visible when it grows on WBS? Shouldn't WBS be more nutritious than WBS agar? Can someone clear this up for me so I can adjust my WBS agar recipe accordingly? (I don't have the opportunity to get the more exotic agar types for now, so I just need help with my question about the nutrition density and agar strength thanks)

Nutritious agar produces tomentose mycelium which is not the same as thin weak mycelium. Those areas look almost starved.

Thanks, thats what I also thought. I will make another agar mix with 60g WBS in 3dl water and boil for 20 min to produce a much darker broth I and I will check how that agar recipe does.

Let me complain about something really quick guys before I snap, have to get this off my chest.
Norway doesn't allow buying oats if you are not registered in an approved association and own horses. (forget buying anything whole sale without permission here) I had to order petri dishes from Englad even tho we have several companies selling them here in Norway. England doesn't ship oats to Norway.
I will go now and buy WBS for 40dollars/kg. That's what you get for living in the country with the highest living standards in the world. Let me just say that one more time, I will go now and buy WBS for 40dollar/kg. Let that sink in for a moment...

Try other grains then. Wheat, rye, milo, etc. Oats and wbs are not the only options.

If I was you I'd get good at LC and do bottle grows exclusively using things like straw, cheap flour, dog food, coffee, etc. Monotubs are not the only way to grow in bulk.

Sounds like you need to look into other options is all. It sucks to have so much regulation but in the end, is it worth it for the quality of life?

Eatyualive has a thread where he slurried pf cakes directly to bulk tubs with good results. Something like a pint cake slurried to 9 quarts sub.
You don't need grains for bulk at all.
