Maybe you need to simplify things if you're new to the hobby, and even if you're an experienced grower, keeping it simple is a good thing. Coir by itself or mixed with verm is an excellent substrate; great water retention, easy to prep and very contam resistant. You don't need more to have great results and a complex substrate does not necessarily equals better results.

Hey guys quick question I have a few colonized BRF cakes that I wanna spawn to trays but can't find any coco coir where I live, what can I use instead?
Edit: also do I need to spawn to a substrate and casing layer or just substrate alone?

wbs is easier to prep well aside from finding a colander that it doesn't fall through. oats are an easier process

I use one of those mesh drain screens, I use a pillow case twice and it worked well, I took an old clean garbage can, put the pillow case inside pulled from the bottom and put the lid rim over the case onto the can and it held it. I dumped the majority of the water out before dumping the wbs n the pillow case.

Even with the pins directly under the cake I was thinking that maybe I could elevate it a little so they have room to grow cause like I said they are directly under the cake

it won't hurt anything to let them hold up their cake

I would start with wbs. Pretty hard to fuck up. Soak for 24 hours, drain and load slightly wet. Stupid simple.

Just spawned my first mono! 1qt (full) spelt berries inoculated 2 months ago, took a long time to finish, very thick myc in the jar, had to cut it apart to get the bottom half out. Smelled like mushrooms and a little sour, but I have a feeling they'll respond well to fresh water and room to expand. 30qt sterilite unmodified, will add holes as necessary. Bottom and top layers of pure coir sandwiching a middle layer 1:1 spawn:coir.

How do you all typically pasteurize your casing materials? Is the pillowcase tek pretty outdated? I've read about using those plastic oven bags or something similar.

Hey so I had a jar of BRF get trich so I tossed in some top soil an left it. It poured for like 3 nights straight an when I went an checked it out an seen it had fruited so I took it am some of the top soil an put it in this flower pot. Would the fruits be safe to eat as long as they are dried properly?
