Don't pack your sub down. You can lightly pat down the casing layer/exposed grains with something flat to make it uniform, but don't pack it tightly. It makes it more difficult for the myc to colonize it.
I usually just lightly pat it with my hand to make it level.

If you pack around the edges though it helps stop side pinning.

right, more density means less shrinkage means less side pins

Here's my atl7 spawned to bulk on may 21st, know I've heard the mycelium to mexicana can be different color, what's going on here, this a contam?
The three shoeboxes all have the same coloration going, so I think it's normal.
Here's my maz, I put to bulk on Sunday afternoon. Damn they hungry

That's normal. It'll get a lot more Yellow and nasty. Metabolites every where and mycelial veins to all the stones. Stones rupturing from the sub... Mexicana is actually kind of nasty lol.

Ya I can tell you packed the edges down tight, both visible edges are the only part of the shoebox that isn't colonized
I'm just messin with ya, but for realsies, I've noticed slower colonization times with tightly packed subs. It just makes more sense that a less tightly packed sub would allow for quicker colonization and quicker water transportation capabilities
I speak only for cubes on this matter, I'm sure woodlovers of any kind, active or not, would not mind a tight sub.

Could always up spawn:sub ratio of you pack it tight. Wouldn't that help with colonization?

I only lightly pack the edges and level out the surface before my casing layer is applied.

possibly?
i just wanted to see what would happen. and that pic is a normal tray. no packing. it was spawned 6 days ago.

the really tightly one has colonized more evenly. especially on the surface. plus it has a top layer.
i could just be beating a dead horse. i just wanted to see how tightly packed ape performs.

To those who use isolates: what is your chosen method? Do y'all start from a clone and transfer out the individual sectors until you have multiple isolates or what? Do you always grow in bulk to test or rock jars or BRF cakes?

Is it because they are weird ass mutants? Or are a few of them actually at full maturity?

Stareatclouds, I usually take the fastest growing sector, or if I see a sector that is pretty isolated already, it makes for getting a mono culture with possibly less transfers.

And that's from a clone? You don't worry take multiple transfers for multiple isolates in case you're transferring away from the fruiting genetics?
