Do you have to sterilize your qtips before swabbing? Seems like overkill considering youre swabbing a dirty mushroom anyway.
One more question.
Is this the only way to obtain PE spores? Or can you make prints somehow?

yes. why make it harder on yourself with a dirty swab?

Ya for real how hard is it to wrap a q tip in foil toss in a jar and pc with whatever else you are sterilizing?

Anyway just realized I have received a couple extraordinary prints from members here through the marketplace in giveaways and really need to show my appreciation...

But I have no Idea how to leave a trade rating.

Any help?

and is it correct to leave a trade rating for a giveaway?

It asks you what type of rating you're leaving for every single rating.

I'm pretty sure that the warranty is void if you run it dry and warp it.

As for Q-tips, I just go ahead and buy pre-sterilized ones. They are dirt cheap and much better than PCing your own. The pre-sterilized ones are longer than regular Q-tips, so much easier to work with. I also like that you can re-use their sterile wrapper, definitely better than a couple of short Q-tips running around in a zip-lock.

And don't be afraid to apply a small amount of vaseline to the gasket before each use.  This will help maintain the elasticity of your gasket and also makes it easier to open your lid.

Don't be afraid to buy an AA and stop worrying about gaskets and shit like that, is what you meant to say, I think.

:whathesaid:

Buy an AA and never worry about PC problems again. Don't be afraid to buy a used one either. They're built like tanks. I got my 25x used on eBay for a little over 200 bucks. My old 23qt presto lost the parts that hold the pop-up valve in place, and now I use it only as a stock pot for pasteurization. 23qt prestos are not bad PCs, but it's definitely worth it to spend a little more on a new 921/925 or a used 941/25x

Yeah that green mold sure is coming back strong.... Should I try to get one flush off my first 5qt spawn WBS monotub, or toss it? Man. Huge tub. Ruined it seems. Such a shame.

I used to try and pull flushes off of triched out tubs with marginal success. Now I toss the tub at the first sign of trich. My advice it to start over with clean spawn. When your tub trichs out before the first flush, 99% of the time it's because it snuck into your spawn.

I need some good information on some filters and agar. I have agar in the mail. I'm unsure if it was my syringes, or use of poly as my filter, that caused green mold. But it happened. So I'm not planning to let it happen again.

Again, agar on the way. Just need some great info for a noob and filter info. Been looking for EZ felt with no luck anywhere.

I can assure you it was your spawn that caused the trich. Just because it looked clean doesn't mean that it didn't have anything nasty in it. I've had this happen to me countless times and the only things you can do to combat it are use really good sterile technique and minimize the spore load in the room where you do your transfers. Syringes straight into grain is a crapshoot. It can work, but there are too many things that can go wrong. Agar is probably the most important step. Having a clean inoculant for your grain will reduce the risk tremendously, but one errant mold spore finding its way into your jar can ruin your grow. It's really hard to spot trich inside a grain jar because a lot of times it doesn't sporulate, so you really have to hedge your bets by being as methodical as possible.

Polyfill works fine, but check out Pasty's writeup on micropore monos. Or if you're talking about your jars, look into ordering some synthetic filter discs and siliconing those onto the lid.

Says it can hold 19 quart jars, so probably 9 half gallons. If you switch to spawn bags, you can do even more, but you kind of need a flowhood for spawn bags. If I were you I'd switch out the weight for a stopcock and get the red overpressure plug, which will effectively turn it into a stovetop autoclave. Keep the weight and black overpressure plug so you can still use it as a canner, but for mushroom cultivation the ability for your sterilizer to pull a vacuum is handy.
