What the ugly comma eater monster said ^^^
Rhizo growth looks nice on agar and it makes it easier to identify bacteria, but that's about it.

I have a question. I'm not sure were to post this, but here seemed like a good place. I've searched among threads and would like some opinions if any are willing to share.
Scenario: I am leaving in two days and going away for 10 days or so. My first MS mini-mono is just finishing fruiting its first flush. There are several 1 inch pins, many smaller ones, loads of tiny ones as well as new white knots.
Questions: Should I refrigerate when I leave? If so, should I take all the pins off or just the larger ones? If so what sizes should be left? If I don't pull off pins will they rot (does size of pin matter for this)? Should I lightly case in either scenario?
Thank you!

Harvest what you can now, even if they aren't mature yet, pins and all. The sub will produce more flushes no problem and you'll probably see fruits when you come back.
If you let it be, the fruits will decay quickly, become all soggy and useless and the sub surface totally fucked with spores by the time you come back.
IMO harvesting now it's way better than refrigerating.

It's being considered to do a cake grow featuring Albino Penis Envy. The cakes are planned on being pretty well cramped together. Planning on using wheat bran instead of brown rice flour. Cakes will be grown inside of full pint-sized, widemouthed jars instead of widemouthed half pints with grain jar lids, and no protective vermiculite barrier.
Cakes are going to be sterilized at 20 psi for 2 hours. The cakes will be inoculated with liberal amounts of LC (4 down the sides of the jar, and one down the center) generated from clean culture on agar. Instead of the cakes being placed on foil they will be placed upon the bottom side of the metal jar lids that the jars come with. Does this sound like it could work to you?

you made an outdoor patch. kinda how you make one. post pics when/if it fruits. outdoor shrooms are awesome. so mystical
Will do if something comes of it. Kind of surprised me that the bacterial grains continued to colonize and there is no mold yet. Hell I was thinking I was about to bury some nasty ass grains, not start an outdoor bed possibly lol.

YES! When I do cakes, they are in wide mouth pint jars. I DO NOT do 4 holes and a vermiculite layer, I use grain jar lids. I just use grains in my cakes. I have done Whole brown rice as well as Oats. I have also toyed with using jiffy mix instead of vermiculite, seems to work fine. In this pic are 2 different batches of cakes. The ones on the right with the plastic lids were knocked up with LC, ones on the left with metal lids are MS. I cant remember which got Oats and which got the Whole Brown Rice, nor can I remember which one got the jiffy mix and which got the CVG. Also I would recommend using some thing that will allow you to bottom water if you get a crazy pin set like in my pics. You a pro, and I am sure you will rock out some sweet APE on cakes!

Yessir. Thanks for making sure. That's good looking out.
Thanks for the tips over using a different saucer other than a metal jar lid, MadHatter420, and Shoman.
How about a large mouth (90mm) plastic lid as a saucer? Place the lids on the perlite upside down, and place the cakes into the lids. Should make bottom watering a breeze. Do you guys think that the cakes will get consolidated enough to even fit inside of a 90mm lid?

I don't see why not the bottom of a pint jar is generally smaller then the top.
That plus consolidation I'm sure they would be quite snug. You would just have e to keep up on surface conditions to prevent alot of pins forming around the lid itself.
