The thermal mass of the grain is the best mechanism via steam, or you could level up to a grain that doesn't require drying?
I've been having a ton of success cold soaking WBS, and wet loading. But when I test a few bags with fan drying the grains before loading, the colonization is aesthetically perfect. (a few wet kernels on the wet load) So I've been blowing air through the bucket of wet WBS, and that helps... so I'm wondering if a bit of surface tension removal might make the last bit of water blow off.
Side note, I despise drying grains.
Millet and WBS are the easiest options for drying. Cold or hot soak, drain for 30-60 minutes, load wet, PC.
I use a couple drops of dish soap to rinse off all the dirt, but I make sure it’s gone in subsequent washes.

I generally add a drop of dish soap to help with cleaning while prepping millet, it cleans as well as breaks surface tension to ensure complete wetting of the grain surface, soap is a surfactant.

I'm going to run a few tests. I'm trying soap vs a rinsing aid at very low amounts for both, as this will be during the last rinse. I'll let you know what I find out.

Hi people!
Can somebody tell me what is going on in here?
This is from a jar that was inoculated back in june, things went really slow, and they are still going really slow. I fruited this like 3 weeks ago. 2:1
My plan was to wait until the fruiting stage so I could at least get a clean clone going but now fruits are looking horrible!
This is TAT why the way, it shouldn't be looking like this. Not at all
What kind of bacterial contamination may I be having in here? Because it doesn't look like something that might be easy to spot in agar if it got until this stage. Is it worth trying to clean or should I just start from another swab?
I posted about these jars a month ago

Sankhara, I would blame the bacteria on grain prep, and the poor pinset in it being dry in there.

I'm a noob (2 grows so far) but will give my 2 cents fwiw. Grain is bacterial (going by Stipe's advice on axenic grain). Mckenna in his book had some notes on permeation time which should be complete 8 days to 3 weeks and advised to mercilessly discard what is contaminated, slow permeation as in your case indicating contam.
Same as you, I had only couple of spots that showed metabolites forming so i proceeded and spawned to shoeboxes. First flush looked very good on both boxes, second flush started to look simmilar to yours (caps that won't open and grown fruit stalling and aborting right before they're about to open). I'm too green to be sure if i overwatered or if it was the initial bacterial contam.
I took a clone of the fucked up fruit. Have yet to try to fruit it but looks ok on agar.
I am wondering though if any bacteria can infect the fruit flesh itself and travel with it when taking a sample for cloning? That would be cool to know.
If not, why not take a clone then in your case?
OR, you might be able to get a spore print even if those capse are not opening, by removing the veil and printing it. Just an idea.

Why not skip the chemicals a DIY a fluidized bed dryer. I’ve been toying with the idea as I run out of counter space to spread out my grain to steam off.

Started with a growbag and used 5cc of golden teacher and applied it. Been a week so decided to check on the bag and right now I see nothing externally really as a sign of spawn taking. Did I put the needle in too deep or something and its currently colonizing the inner part that I can't see without breaking the bag up? Or did I fuck up sterilizing?

Thats what I am thinking. I am getting some growth on some of the grains that were caught on the edge of the bag away from the rest of the grains. Not sure what it was. It could also just be my house being cooler with the closet its in at probably 68f

Hi everyone, first time doing bottle tek. Have 2 questions.
1. How do i determine if a jar/bottle is clean? For grain jars i used Stipe's videos on axenic grain and looked for metabolites showing on the glass. Here where grain is mixed with coir I'm not sure how to be sure the thing is clean.
2. I'm experimenting with different sized bottles. Have 2 pp5 plastic 500ml containers. Instead of putting a bag over it for fruiting i was thinking of trying to do what Mateja does for her BRF cackes and fruit the bottles in a water tub.
5 liter shoebox, dubbtubed for space with 1 inch water at the bottom and only two 500 ml bottles in the tub.
Is this something worth trying or are there any arguments against this making it a futile attempt?
