Realistically, how much do you guys think I could push the spawn:sub ratio for jars that look like what I have, and get away with it? (I'm not going to quote the pics again and spam the thread, they are a couple posts above)
For shoeboxes. I think 1:2 should be reasonable, 1:4 might be pushing it a tad much ?
EDIT: LOL of course my post is a new page. Pics: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28343103#28343103

As I mentioned earlier, there was a fluffy overlay on the mushrooms in the picture. I have removed it, and now they look like this. They appear strange to me, and I would like to get your opinion on them.

If you’re worried about bacteria, 1:1 or 1:2 will be fast enough that you’ll get fruit, but don’t expect too much in the way of subsequent flushes.

Yeah, I guess I should play it safe and go for 1:2. You think they will succumb to mold before first flush with 1:4, yeah?
I do have 6 quarts, I guess I could do one 1:4 for future reference, so I know that a jar that looks like that can/cannot be spawned with 1:4.

I should not have removed the fluffy thing (mycelium) from the mushrooms, right?

Yeah if you’re worried about bacteria don’t go above 1:2. That’s my advice. I’ve had spawn that looked 100% fine trich out at 1:3. It just has a longer colonization time. But I’ve sent lots of highly bacterial spawn at 1:1 that gave me 10-15g. Rarely a second flush, though.

Alright, I'll let the jars sit at 100% for a few more days, spawn at 1:2 and won't compress the substrate that much. Should give them a fighting chance.

Apologies for the confusion. What I meant was that I noticed a fluffy overlay, which I now understand is the mycelium, on the mushrooms. Initially, I removed it, but now I'm uncertain if it was the right decision. Should the mycelium have been left intact, or was it appropriate to remove it? I would appreciate your insights on this matter.

If it was just fuzzy mycelium on the stipe that’s perfectly fine to leave on. The bruising on the mushrooms after you removed it is perfectly normal as well.

I was going over this some more, you think the lack of second flush is due to the bacteria weakening the mycelium or due to the lack of substrate/water? Both?

Both, mostly lack of water, rehydrsting helps somewhat but you can almost never get a sub to soak uo as much as it has lost

I made some coir substrate by multiplying my coir weight in grams by 4.5. the result was my water weight in grams. 325 g coir x 4.5 = 1462.5 grams of water. My field capacity was almost spot on as a result. I ended up throwing a hand full of vermiculite in to give me slightly under field capacity substrate.

Thanks, will try 1:2 and report back. Technically some of those jars are ready to go now, but I'll give them a couple more days. Cooking some coir now, probably spawn them tomorrow or Monday.

Absolutely, at 400 degrees for 12 hours then I ran it a second time to make sure 😁

Careful. If you’re not using one of these, your verm could harbor dangerous mold spores.

I've heard about that so I soaked the vermiculite in bleach and Lysol before baking, I also used a UV light out of an abundance of caution.
