SHOEBOXES- How to pause
Hello everyone, I need to leave for 2 weeks and need to pause them if possible. They have been prepd this weekend. So it's been a couple of days. This is how they look like:

Is this OK to put in the fridge for 2 weeks? I'm assuming if I do put them in the fridge I should latch the lids, not to have the sub dry out, right?

If they’re only a few days old, I’d just leave them be. It’ll take a couple of weeks to fruit anyway.
But yes, if you want to put them in the fridge just lid them.

Thank you sir. I'm a bit worried they'll start fruiting while I'm away on the window sill for the neighbors to see plus the lid is on and it'll just be a mess if I'm not there. They go into the fridge. Thank you.

I agree with you on almost everything. I have to disagree on misting tub walls.
I keep my tub walls and lid wet. I never mist the cake. I get great results.
Well that advice is consistent with your ratings.
I will say there is nothing wrong with growing in horse poo, it's just a little more complicated because of pasteurization. it's a great renewable and environmentally safe resource that people who can't source coir can use with great success.

I get that for A2G, one wedge vs a whole petri doesn't shave off more than 2-3 days total but there is something magical about shaking a jar 3 days after inoc and seeing sooooo much mycelium in there. And 24 hours later it's already picking up again, fast.
Compared to the jars that only got one wedge it's like watching the Apollo mission launch and then watching a backyard toy rocket you got at the dollar store.

John and RJ, how do you prep your brown rice perfectly? I see so little information on rice and tons of praise for other grains and seeds. Right now I'm doing cold soak oats Baba style. Once I finish up the oats, I'll try brown rice since another member mentioned that oyster myc on rice is delicious sliced up and pan fried.

I can't find a specific write up, but I low simmer the rice for ten minutes so that it's not fully cooked. Then rinse it off with cold water in a strainer, strain it for around 15 minutes and then load up my jars.
For the PC, around 90 minutes should be fine. Also, I give the jars a good shake, while they're still hot, as rice does tend to clump up.

I’m just curious what millet preps people find advantageous. I’ve never tried flash prep, just traditional soak and strain (boil water and remove from heat first) 24hrs. I load my jars slightly below 1/2. I guess I pieced it together from various posts and gathered advice, can’t really remember, but have never followed a specific tek start to finish for it. If anyone has a burning desire to link some… I’ve seen Stipe’s flash prep and others, just curious what some of the favorites are.

How is the brown rice working for you? Does it colonized faster than WBS? Thinking about giving it a try.

It seems to colonize a little quicker, but there are quite a few variables, so that's nots something I'd necessarily put down to the rice. WBS should have more inoculation points and thus colonize faster in theory I think, though I'm open to correction on this. I like working with both.

100% agree! I’d guess that in most places in the world, manure is abundant, locally available, and damn near free, compared to coco, which is expensive and has to ship literally from the other side of the planet (at least from where I live)
Sure pasteurizing is annoying and I personally use coco more than manure because of the ease of coco, but to say manure shouldn’t be used is ridiculous. In fact a mix of manure/straw is a great substrate

I don't believe anyone is saying that manure should never be used at all, ever. It's more the case that it's not always a good choice of substrate for cubes, for those who are very new in particular and who don't know how to properly pasteurize. It is more prone to contamination than coir and doesn't really do a better job for cubes. Stipe -n Cap sets out a good explanation on the use of manure and substrate amendments in general here:
Uncle Ben's, Broke boi, kits, manure substrates, amendments, and other dumb shit
If it's free though, or lower cost than coir, which it is in some countries, and if people do their research and treat it properly, then sure, whatever floats your boat and gets the job done. We can grow on cigarette buts or cardboard come to that, if that's what people want to do.

I confess (whoops, wrong thread!) that I feel guilty about using coir. People who call it environmentally friendly are either blind or full of shit. Plantations are terrible for the environment, and the stripping and washing process uses tons of fresh water. Throw in cross globe shipping and it's terrible for the environment. I think when I have more space to work with I'm going to start using manure (it's the shit!) instead of coir. It's a personal choice and I am not recommending it as easier or saying anyone who uses coir is amoral.
