Some of the headless pins that grew into normal shrooms are in these photos (along with some normal pins). All are "Z-Strain" variety, but I've also seen it with x7x. Top and bottom are the same area in same shoebox, but have different focus and show a little bit different view.

thought I'd share my recent "experiment"
two tubs, same batch of sub, same batch of lc. one had casing, the other had a few colonized grains left over in the bag sprinkled on top of the casing.
the one with the casing layer started fruiting before it was completely colonized even though the lid was on (I know fruiting conditions are set right away but I wanted to make sure everything was colonized first), so I flipped the lid when first pins appeared. the fruits are quite small and thin. I already harvested a few that were tearing their veils.

the second tub (the one with grainspawn on top) was kept closed until fully colonized, then I flipped the lid. its been fruiting slower, but the fruits are larger.

there are many pins on both... looking forward to some nice flushes.
On my next grow I think I'll just mix everything with no casing
... they are all leaning towards the light, I have to turn the tubs every now end then or they all go off to the same side

In terms of what you guys prefer, if you get a fresh MSS, do you 1) agar it out then do several transfers of healthy mycelium to isolate one or two of the best myc 2) you just get a clean MSS agar plate and transfer a big chunk of that to grain and clone the best grower.
I have 3 MSS varieties i plated, transfered the best areas twice, and now have at LC stage for the best myc plates of each variety. Each final transfer plate looks quite uniform. I was reading up on more of bod's flowchart and extended info and glanced at a statement that sometimes (not infrequently?) isolated myc can grow great on a dish but still be a trash fruiter or just never fruit. Hence the question for 1 or 2.

Itβs hard to tell which plates will perform better without fruiting many of them. In my limited experience so far - aggressive/uniform growth on agar has generally carried over to more desirable growth on grain/bulk, and ultimately fruiting.
Iβm sure itβs possible to have nice aggressive/uniform plate turn out bunk but Iβve yet to see it. I lack both the time and patience to commit to fruiting the less promising ones just in case

I germinate a spore print on a bunch of plates. Then, I measure and transfer the largest/fastest growing germinations. I let those plates pin and send the pins to grain. The best fruits grown from that grain get printed and I start all over.

I prefer going to grain asap, Iβll use the actual germ plate if itβs clean but typically I use t1 or t2 and only go past that if itβs absolutely necessary to clean the culture.
Youβll see more variety this way so it depends what you want to do. I like to see as many phenos as possible to pick from.

I'll tell you, favorable responses to this method are going to be few and far between. A good place to start is with cubensis and pf tek; you can learn agar in conjunction to accelerate the process. But tossing a bunch of feces and grass and spores in an old tree trunk or pickle bucket or what have you a full canopy does not = good sir. good day

Curious, for each of your MSS...how many plates do you guys expand to. Like..MSS > you pick 2-3ish good areas, transfer. Then transfer 2-3 times to clean up and fully isolate. Then attempt to grow out? Or do you guys like to go MSS, pick a large clean sector (thereby being multiple different strains), go straight to a grow, clone 2-3 of the good ones as different genetic strengths will appear, go from there?
Trying to get an idea of popular methodology.

Anyone have experience with 150-200L autoclaves?
Looking at these, not sure if there's a cheaper unbranded alternative to be found on alibaba that anyone has had success with...
