I added a casing layer of coco coir after full colonization. I’ve never done this before but had some laying around. What Is the point of this? Should I mist daily? Also, how do fruits get triggered by light if there is a casing layer?

A casing layer, or pseudo casing layer, can be beneficial with something like PE in particular. With most cubes it isn't necessary though. That being said, I'm in high desert and use a pseudo casing layer, often at the time of spawning to bulk, to give just a little extra moisture reservoir for the mycelium. AyePlus, a page or two back mentioned that a casing layer can help with encouraging pinning as well.

If the substrate is at proper field capacity, and isn't getting so much air flow that it's drying out, then there shouldn't generally be a need to mist until around the time of first harvest. But keeping an eye on surface conditions, especially once the surface is more colonized, is important.

As for light, think of it as being mostly for directionality for the fruits, not so much a pinning trigger. Moisture evaporation from the substrate surface is more important with regard to pinning. There is a great write up here by Stipe-n Cap that I would recommend for anyone interested:

Can someone tell me why my shoeboxes keep drying out around the time pins appear? After that point the tub basically stops doing anything.

My last one was 1/3 fine verm, kept in a Martha tent with 80% humidity.  The substrate shrinks down, away from the walls of the shoebox, presumably from the mycelium using up all the moisture?

It looks dry but still has some yellowing going on. So frustrated

What’s your ratio of spawn:sub?

Try a 1:6 spawn to coir ratio with no verm and leave the lid on. I don’t use a Martha and never even mist with no drying issues.

1:3. So there’s too much spawn and it’s getting to crowed in there? It’s always super densely colonized

I run 1:3 and it’s never a problem. Usually a cake getting shrunk like that is a sign of inadequate moisture, ie too little substrate. But I’m not sure. SPG says a higher ratio.
Maybe try that

I never had problems either when I did 1:3 with a 1 part pseudocasing, so I’m betting just leaving the lid on instead of trusting the Martha would would fix 99% of the problem.

2 tubs sent on the same day. Both gt. The one that’s less colonized is fruiting more than the one that’s more colonized.. wtf 🤷🏻♂️

The one thats more colonized had some grainspawn sprinkled on the top

My Golden Teacher really like to have a small top layer of coir to enhance pinset.

Hi folks, would we consider these jars 100% colonised ?

Thanks

Those look like there may be some microbial contamination to me but I could be wrong on this one. When did you shake them last? You could try shaking them again and see if they recover quickly and the mycelium takes over some of the still uncolonized grain.

Those are definitely not axenic. They might be 100% colonized but not by straight cube myc.

Not sure, but I know plate pins can look a little different from the fruits they produce

I don't know that's a plate thing. Pins in general can look different than the adult fruit, whether in plate or not. The PE I've had looks nothing at the pin stage in shoebox like adult fruit.

Kind of like how a kid can grow up to look very different as an adult. Runt becomes stud, things like that.

You ever get pins that start out with no cap, just like a small pointy white stipe, but turn into regular looking mushrooms with brownish caps when mature? I get a few of those here and there sometimes.
