What brand coir do you use? Some has added trich. It helps growing roses and shit like that.
Plantronix Coco Bliss is good coir for growing shrooms. Nature's Premium brand coir is also good. None of that has trich.
And the coir used for lizard bedding and spider terrariums should not have trich.

Hi everyone, gotta question about pausing grain. What do you do when you need to go away for 2 weeks and you got the myc on grain? Can I put in the fridge and then just take out for a couple of days and go to substrate? Or should I go from fridged grain to new grain and then to substrate? Or is this a bad idea completely and should start from a fresh agar plate going to fresh grain and chuck what I have away? Hopint I don't have to do that.

You can definitely refrigerate spawn for a couple weeks. I think you’ll be good.

Thanks Vinny, any advice on getting it back to life after taking out of the fridge? Should I leave it for a couple of days at room temp or can it go to substrate direct out the fridge and it will then bunce back while permeating the substrate?

I recently sent two month old spawn from the fridge and it behaved as if it hadn’t been refrigerated at all. Just sent it straight from the ice box, still cold. No discernible difference.

I don't think it really matters. Common advice is to let it warm up for a day or two. My view is there is no better place to warm up than inside a nice cozy substrate.

Isn’t it such a weird thought to even say “oh this has to warm up by itself in a jar it can’t warm up separated and broken up”. When In reality it’d warm up in a fraction of the time being broken up?

Ah, what can I tell you. My lack of imagination, or just being too carefull about not fucking up, even though fucking up would be a good way to learn. It's weird, I admit it, and sort of dumb too. But fuck it.

I got to see my first trich today as well. A shoebox from a bacterial jar that just never fully colonized... I knew the jar wasn't great from the start, but figured what the hell.

Next time just cover the bacterial jar with coir, throw a Ziploc bag on top and let it fruit that way.

Looks excellent tho. It can be disastrous to put to coir grain that isn't 100%. (Imagine rubbing an uncolonized grain up against unsterile coir.) You are in good shape because you shook when it was well past 50% colonized, so you knew it was thoroughly mixed with mycelia. Its nice to be on the safe side and go 12-24 hours after you see it at what appears to be 100%. (what if the internal conditions caused slightly slower colonization) right?

I've recently got success with hydrating grains in an Insta Pot (-like PC). 6l pot, 2l grains, 2l water. I've got success with brown rice - cooking time 8 minutes - a few months ago with a bottle grow. I've now started a few bottles with milo hydrated this way for 13 minutes. I've got a bag each of wheat, rye and barley and try these next. The Idea behind this is, first you save electricity (I should measure that...), second you keep all the nutrients from boiling grains inside your grow, one Alternative would be to hydrate coir with grain water _ONLY_FOR_BOTTLES_, don't spawn that. Or make grain water LC, but I don't have use for that much LC.

Ok thank you sir. It'll be out for a couple more days then it's going to the fridge for a pause because I need to go away for a while and then after two weeks it's going to substrate so we'll see how it all goes in the end, but I am stoked that this is looking nice and healthy. I prepd 3 jars, two are good and one didn't move an inch. Smell says bacterial probably, but I have way to little experience to determine why. All of them prepd the same way but PCd separately due to a small PC. Inoculated from same plate at the same time. So what the hell happened to that one between PCing and inoculating I have zero clue.
