Sorry if I wasn't clear; I'm going agar to grain. This is the agar that has been stored in the fridge over a year.

Ahhh, ok. Yeah, I've had stored plates not come back. I'll always try it on a new plate first and use that plate to go to grain.

Any thoughts on using just vinegar are a general purpose cleaner for surfaces as an alternative to commercial cleaning sprays?

Sensible advice and something I hadn't considered.
I think I know how you might answer but let me know if there is any sense to this: say I get a brand new spore syringe and grow some out on fresh agar plates. Then I do a PC run of 10 jars. Is there any sense to inoculating half of the jars from agar and half directly from the syringe, just as an experiment to isolate whether I'm screwing something up transferring from agar to grain?

I've been doing the same cause things got hot in town. Im trying to switch up from consistent small-moderate grow, into running as much as possible and stocking up a couple pounds. Gonna try growing some weed in between since thats legal now.

It’s a poor disinfectant and reacts with a bunch of surfaces to cause damage. I like ammonium hydroxide based products for disinfecting surfaces. However, it’s worse for your lungs so everything has it’s pros and cons.

There is none, I would never suggest syringe to grain. You're doing right going agar to grain. Next is making sure everthing is clean first. I wouldn't suggest using the germ plate for inoculating either.

I don't think you can infer anything useful from that comparison if the intention is to rule out deficiencies in your work. Better would be to drop blank agar wedges from an unused plate in some jars as a test. If anything grows in the jars you know for sure it's a problem with your sterile technique or grain prep.

Ok thanks, now please don’t laugh, but what about using vodka? I know it isn’t technically a disinfectant because the alcohol content is too low, but I’ve read other sources that said it was efficient against mold, which could make it very useful for mycology if true.

I’m sad I can’t cultivate.
I find it easy to keep going once the process is in motion, but getting started again is like pulling my own teeth.
Like many people here I suffer the perpetual motion of ADHD, be it non-stop cultivating or full stop doing nothing.
I'm currently trying to bust out of a break and it's soooooo fucking difficult to do. ugh.
Cult in a tiny house is fucking awful, no room for anything.

Guerrilla said: Good to see you back dude! I actually posted the other day saying I hadn't seen you in a while and hoping you were OK. How have you been?
thank you friends ^-^ it’s been awhile, i’ve missed y’all.
i’ve been good! no serious reasons for my hiatus, just got busy with life over the holidays & this past month & it was a lot to post all the time so i kinda went dark until i had some good time to post. haven’t been doing a ton of cult work lately either, contam problems just kept getting worse & i feel like a poser posting when i don’t have my shit together lol but ya boy has been getting back on the horse lately. i hope you guys have been holding up alright!!
i’ve mainly taken somewhat voluntary breaks but i always end up missing cultivation so much, it feels so good to get back into it. a lot of times i end up slowing down or stopping just because there’s not much i can reasonably do with a few pounds of actives (trust me, i’ve tried lol). wish i could get more into gourmets but it’s dry as shit here & i can’t set up a martha to fruit most shit properly so im stuck with monotub fruiting species which seem to be mainly actives from what i’ve seen. been forced to stop once because landlord was selling the house i was in & it fuckin sucked. but it does give you some more time to focus on other hobbies & shit. i 100% feel the low grade paranoia that comes with growing actives. usually it’s not too bad, but there were times in the past where i would get high & be paranoid the whole night, or see cops in my complex & drive around until i was sure they weren’t at my front door. the little minute of panic while seeing cop car lights 10 feet from your house is not very cool lol. i’ve had plenty of dreams about getting busted & whatever too, definitely takes a subconscious toll after awhile even if you feel generally comfortable with it

Nothing is worth risking problems with the cops, not even mush cult. But tbh, I assume (at least here) cops have better things to do than bust a guy who has a mono with shrooms... But yeah, America is a different world ^^
I don't want that you feel the need to cultivate, but just having a good soul like you around every now and then warms our hearts <3
I am also limited in growing space, and no place for a martha or something like that to grow bigger. But there are at least some medicinal mushrooms that can be well cultivated in monos. Something I want to get into as soon as I got some cultures just waiting for them to arrive in the post tbh xD
But as you know, I am just happy having you back my lost brother

luckily im out on the west coast, weed is legal & i think generally most cops here have better shit to do than bust mushroom growers. but there are definitely states in the US i would be paranoid as shit even just smoking weed, let alone growing schedule 1 drugs lol. cop culture in general here suuuuucks.
i’ll have to look more into medicinals! it seems reishi grow pretty readily in those conditions but those are the only medicinal im even really familiar with. it would just be so nice to grow a few lbs of lions mane… gonna set up a martha at my gf’s house once i get settled there so there is an eventual light coming at the end of that tunnel
you’re seriously too kind shrimps <33 i did really miss the community on here & it’s so nice to be back. even if i’m not doing much cult, i’ll be sure to keep checking in (:

If the ethanol content in the vodka is 50% or more, it’s a better disinfectant than 90% Isopropanol. However, I’m curious why you would want to use something more expensive and less effective than just buying 70% IPA.

I see, so you're saying germinate one plate, then transfer a slice to another plate, grow that out, then use the second plate to inoculate? Or do I misunderstand?

it’s the tastiest gourmet i’ve had yet. oysters are cool but lions mane is DELICIOUS even just in some butter with salt & pepper. let me know how it goes! i’ve read lions mane need a toooooon of FAE for those “teeth” to form properly, otherwise they look like weird sponges. but if you can get the balance of humidity to FAE even decently close, you should get some decent yield. may not be the prettiest but they’ll be edible!! im sure there’s some way to do it without a martha but i haven’t seen too many gourmet grows that weren’t also in some sort of controlled environment or in a humid part of the country
