Problem solving, too. You can do everything β€œright” and still have problems. I’m looking at you, bacterial spawn.

It’s a good small scale experience of hope, patience, and wanting it more than everyone else not being enough sometimes. Really makes you activate the old almonds.

Am I just an idiot or this hobby incredibly frustrating sometimes?

I've been doing this for about seven months now and at every turn I run into issues. I've had reasonable success but most of what I do is fighting fires with various annoying problems.

My latest hilarious issue is probably my cat getting into my covered coir bucket and peeing in it because that's the only issue I can see. All of my shoeboxes have stalled but the spawn looked great - 18h soak and rinse millet, sterilised for 2 hours and cooled overnight, inoculated with a nice uniform T3 agar wedge under the flow hood after an alcohol spray, shake tested twice with good recovery time and inspected for wet spots or weird patches etc. Spawned to bucket tek CV slightly under standard field capacity at 1:3 v/v and placed into a Pasty mono. Result - weird surface blotching associated with bacteria and no pins after 3 weeks. Slight bacillus smell. Lovely.

It legitimately makes me so angry and sad and tests my mental health. I need to take a break. Everything fails at work and coming home to more failure is slowly killing me.

I have had terrible months 13 years into the hobby. I started out with PF cakes, had success... then became obsessed with learning bags. Bags are hard for novices. I'm still pretty green.

In my signature below is a thread that changed my focus. Reading it from beginning to end will make most of us with problems refocus on clean spawn (when we had thought we already had clean spawn). A white jar is not necessarily clean. In fact, its very subtle, the difference between clean and bacterial. Posting grain photos in that thread is a very good move to triage ailments.

I would like to add this discussion. Don't give up. I was getting incredibly frustrated in this hobby. I was getting a few fruits here and there. After about 7 months in the hobby I had harvested about 2 ounces dry. Then it all just clicked and I  got my environment dialed in and my spawn game on point. Since October I have harvested over a pound and I have a much better understanding of the process as a whole. You got this!

I've also been there! First two years solid i was putting out ample flushes, nothing to brag about but still would consider myself a very competent grower. Consistently hitting 75% BE (0.75 dry oz per jar spawn) and often 100% BE. Had under 1% failure rate on agar, 3% failure on jars and almost 0% tub failure. All of 2021 shit falls apart. The entire fucking year. I tried everything, even made a thread here describing it all and pleading for help. 90% failure on jars and tubs. 250 plates, 500 jars, 100 bags, 40 tubs all trash. I was ready to give up sell everything yolo it all away. Halfway through 2022 finally figure out the cause (which for me was an extremely specific and obscure detail) and things are finally returning to normal. 0.25% agar failure, 5% failure on jars, 75% BE. I did actually have a few tub failures but now i narrowed it down to one specific culture so i'm not worried there. I've had to scrap every culture i had and start from spore twice since i started growing in 2019. Nothing wrong with taking some time off, or scaling back and doing less so you can focus on every minute detail.

Bacteria is a bitch but generally my spawn is clean and fruits at >30g per ~300g millet on the first flush. The turn around time from agar to spawn run is what I really hate -- ESPECIALLY in winter when everything is crazy slow.

Spawn from the same run fruited fine and the jars were all fine by visual inspection, I literally do think the cat peed in the coir bucket and introduced what is essentially fertilizer into the substrate. It did seem a little wetter than I prep coir at, ew. The only times I've seen this behaviour was in very, very bacterial spawn. Either that or I somehow compressed my substrate so hard that it suffocated the mycelium.

I'll take a while off. I had some super bacterial (ever seen agar plates put out metabolites? lol) Ghost plates from a crazy dirty swab that I was struggling to clean up and APEs that refused to germinate on agar anyway so it's a little stressful. I'll figure it out eventually. Thank you both.

Does anyone know why my friends AA pressure cooker on a propane flame will only get to 7psi?
I've never used AA cookers or a propane flame. They said everything right and no leaks, but still won't go above 7psi after an hour.

So just finished harvesting, swabbing and cloning the Avery Albinos I got from SH  Damn, I love those mushrooms. Was my first time swabbing, so I feel kinda like I raped them... but its for spreading the love <3

Got around 947gr. Wet, they are really meaty and heavy although there were smaller. And had some great fat clusters aswell which I've cloned.

But I forgot the weight the Nat's I harvested wet xD so that's a bummer...

Going to make a small giveaway for some nat prints and avery swabs :3 just too lazy to do it now^^

Guys, for teks like this "Millet spawn", does they work either measuring the grain and the water by volume or by weight? I mean, as long as the mentioned proportions are kept, it works anyway?

That tek measures in mL, which is a volume. It may not work keeping the same proportions by weight. Water is easy because 1mL weighs 1g (more or less). Grain not so much.
