They look pretty good to my eye. Do you have any prepped grains that didn’t make it into a jar? Like even a couple spilled ones?
Ive had much better success with wheat when I’m able to break the grain with my thumbnail, and the core is turning from hard/white to just slightly translucent.
Edit: the outside shouldn’t look moist, the moisture content is ideally cooked into the grains, substantial water outside of the grain after PCing tends to be a recipe for bacteria IME

FriedEgg said: you can’t just add X amount of water and cook for X amount of minutes and expect it to work every time. sure, you'll get the numbers right and get lucky a lot of the times and when you do it's great (like AKA said). but it's not consistent. and for some people like myself, it'll just never work.
Is this true for cooking too though? I’m curious now if I can just automate the cooking process to some degree with an electric kettle and controls, but I’ve always manually ran it prior.

Works for cooking rice, as long as you keep using the same kind.

Its true to some degree, grain varies, ambient temp varies, if you have a gas stove its pretty hard to be exact every time
But with a sealed electric system on a timer you can easily hit that 45-55% hydration every single time,
Think of a commercial rice cooker.
If you’re only making a small amount of grain i like the electric kettle idea,
but a bucket heater is 1500 watts, costs like 20$ and if you have two buckets and a sump pump you’re 90% of the way, 12.99 each for 2 programmable outlet timers,
Set the pump to run first, for long enough to fill the bucket, then have the heater kick on for X amount of time
When you get there you’ll be able to drain the grain, and bag it/ load into containers after it steams off, (assuming you time it so its still hot when you get there)
Then when you leave fill the grain bucket and water bucket and it’ll be ready next time you show up.

Yeah still got some extra outside the jars. I'm able to split them open pretty easily but they still have some structural integrity (not mush). Here's a few shots.

Looks pretty good. These are wheat:

This is (from left to right) after a thorough rinse, 4 minute boil, 12 minutes, 18 minutes sliced with a very sharp knife.
Wasn't satisfied with the picture difference so instead I now choose the much more scientific goldy locks chew test. Munch a few grains, if they are hard and "grainy" they are not ready, when they are squishy they are too done, when they are al dante they are just right.

I was planning on using my 50gal electric kettle, I can do 50-100lbs of grain in it's mesh insert. But I do like your idea, especially if the buckets were more like a hopper with some pneumatic valves, so I could still do the autobagging thing.. hmmmmm

Oh damn i was thinking you were talking about a little tea kettle or something, i was just suggesting buckets as a step up in size lol,
If you have that thing you could totally just leave with it full of dry grain and do what i said, unless its too high power to use an outlet timer.
If you want an auto wet bagger i know myers mushroom sells one for around 7.5k with all the fun pneumatics. Might be more up your alley, its pretty big though

He makes it for pellets but it would work for grain
He also (for pre order only)has a new bagging machine for cooked grain @6k

they look good to me.
did you taste them? i like to pop a few kernels in my mouth and bite down on them, cut them in half with your teeth and see how the inside looks/feels. it should be just barely cooked all the way through. if there's hard white dry material inside the kernels then you didn't hydrate/cook them long enough.
if that jar gets fully colonized then you'll know you did it right.

Lol about the tea kettle. And yeah my kettle system has a PID controller where I can set run times, I just haven't been using it since I don't have 240v for the elements rn, but maybe I'll get some 120v elements. I'm actually in the process of building his DIY version of the autobagger right now for fruiting blocks: Mines going to have two silos though so I don't have to premix. Was only about ~$850 for the parts so even if it's not as nice it's saving me a ton of dough. Interesting he's selling a wet bagger for spawn though, I saw that before but assumed it was dry. I wonder if he's no longer dry bagging spawn.. That's basically what I want to build though, for spawn.

He markets it for pellets , but i dont see why the same style 5lb unit couldnt be used for wet bagging grain with minor water level adjustments. The “dry” unit that hasnt been released is for prepped spawn. four AA’s fit about 200 lbs of grain, so i’ve been thinking about it but at my current volume of spawn needed for gourmets at the price point it’d be pretty overkill, and for blocks i use loose sawdust from a firewood cutter so sadly the knife valve setup wont work for me, been looking at soil/pot/bag fillers instead.

That is how you want them to be, dry on the outside and hydrated on the inside. I never worked with rye berries, but general rule of thumb for grains is before loading them into your jars and in the PC, they should not stick to your hand if you grab a handful. If your grains are sticking to your hand before loading into the PC, they are still too wet. Plus its better to be on the drier side than wet.

I just run melmac TP. I just stabbed an old AA+ print and got good clean growth. I would like to cross with my TP.
I see you have one going also.
What's the best way to cross? Swab spore plate with both?
